Joss Whedon's FireFly - New Series

well fox is hoping that it'll be as big a hit for them as either buffy or angel was for the wb, so they want to make sure it's what they want before they put it on.

New stuff...

Lots of new info recently on the show. Apparently teaser trailers have started showing up on Fox - on SUnday nights inbetween Malcome in the Middle and the other Sunday night shows. I have been keeping an eye out but haven't noticed it yet.

Apparently Nathan Fillion's casting as the captain (and I suppose lead character) is big news in Edmonton, his home town. In an interview with the paper Fillion gives us some hint as to what to expect come fall:

Described as being every mother's dream with his politeness and devotion to family, the 31 years old plays Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds--a captain on the losing side of a great galactic war for independence 800 years in the future--who along with his ragtag crew on the Firefly class starship, Serenity, are trying to survive under the rule of the new government.

To prepare for the role, Fillion rented two videos that Whedon had used as inspiration for Firefly: The Searchers staring John Wayne and Ulzana's Raid with Burt Lancaster.

"[Mal] was bitter coming out," said Fillion, "he lost more than the war. He lost a sense of compassion and forgiveness. He lost his faith in God. He won't kill anyone unless he has to. Nice guys can only get so mad," explained Fillion. "But when you're hollowed out inside you can get pretty mad."

Firefly staring Nathan Fillion premiers in late September on FOX this Fall.

As has been previously established the central premise of the show is to parallel the US Civil War, I have been wondering to what degree this will be followed through. Will they touch upon issues of slavery and reconstruction, carpetbaggers and scalawags?
Not a period of history I am very intimate with, but I am curious to know how far the analogy will go.

Although, come to think of it, I am not sure they will do much exploration of the political situation in this era - as it sounds as if the crew will spend most of their time on the 'frontier'. More of a cowboy movie than a post-civil war analogy perhaps?

Only a few months to go before this hits US tv screens - a problem for me as I will be moving back to the UK at the time of its debut.

that sucks:(

Maher Boards Firefly
Sean Maher, who plays medical officer Simon Tam in Fox's upcoming SF series Firefly, told the Zap2it.com Web site that he took the role mainly based on faith in creator Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). "I had a meeting, then got the role a couple of weeks later," Maher told the site. "There was no script available. There were only scenes. There were only sides. I had to go on the sides. They were fantastic. Then meeting Joss. ... He's one of the most amazing people I've ever met in my life. He's a genius."

Maher (Ryan Caulfield) plays a medical officer on the transport spaceship Serenity, whose crew struggles to make ends meet in the wake of a universal civil war, 400 years in the future, Zap2it reported. "I'm not actually part of the crew," Maher said. "I'm a doctor. It's so hard to simplify anything. There are definitely two major ruling planets, and I'm from one of those planets. If you're from one of those planets, you're more privileged. You have a lot of money. So I'm a doctor, a trauma surgeon. My sister is this prodigy, this amazing genius, so we sent her away to this government-sponsored academy that we think is just an amazing school. Then it turns out that she is part of this government test, and they screwed with her brain. I spent all this money to have her snuck out. Then I get on this ship, and it's disreputable and innocuous and all that. So I'm sort of a doctor-turned-fugitive. I become resident physician."

I alsways get excited when a new scifi show comes out. I can't wait to check it out. I hope it's good enough to add to my regular schedule of shows. September is always busy....lots of new fall shows to check out. But the scifi ones are usually at the top of my list.

I am really keeping my fingers crossed that it is going to be huge, but I am worried about Whedon stretching himself too thinly, and Fox trying to bully him into making it their way, not his.

I don't know if you read this entire thread, but if you want to see some great stills of the show (I think from the pilot) have a look at the following website:
