If there was a Series 6... (After Enterprise)

Do you mean a series set entirely on a Ringworld? Like a ship crashlands and they have to try and get off?

It would make an interesting series, but it wouldn't be Star Trek IMHO. It would have some of the same problems that DS9 had being stuck on a space station, but would have no cool ships or established aliens. They could only be new aliens, or else they would hitch a ride off with them (unless they were also stuck).

At least you could visit a new section of the world each week, so it wouldn't have DS9's problem there.

I think that a structure like a Dyson Sphere/ Niven's Ringworld/ Banks' Orbitals will actually come one day, they seem a more efficient use of planetary resources. But the technology is way above the Star Trek era.

As you say though, they already know one is there.

No, not one where they are stuck there, I meant a series based around an exploration of the one they found in Relics. This series could feature different ships/crews who are exploring a variety of sectors at the same time, but which have totally different technologies and landscapes in each. Sort of like TOS, but without all the flying around the Galaxy stuff. After all, if it was like Ringworld, then there should be the remains of thousands of races who had settled there over the many years it had remained stable.

I think this would make for some very interesting stories. :)

There have been a number of eps featuring Time Travel, and specifically time-traveling Starfleet officers. There was a 2-part Voyager ep, for example (can't remember the title offhand). Also a couple of Enterprise eps, including the season finale, mentioned a Temporal Cold War. A series could theoretically be built around that idea.

A series built around the Temporal arm of Starfleet, aka Captain Braxton, is another idea that I would like to see. There would certainly be a vast amount of ideas that could be made into stories, after all, you are dealing with literally infinite numbers of realities.

Besides, time travel is one of my favourite sci-fi premises! ;)

I bet they'll go for the time travel series next...there's only so many stories you can do with a standard ship-based sci-fi series without rehashing old plots, unless you have some truly unique characters and alien races and technology added to the mix.

As much as I'd like to see a time travel series, I don't think they'll do one. I think I read somewhere that Berman and Bragga didn't like the idea and a lot of fans seem to have something against it as well. :(

I read that they did actually have the 'Time travel' idea as a possibility for the current series, but when they decided on 'Enterprise' as the premise, they incorporated it into the story -- hence the 'Temporal Cold War' running arc plot in Enterprise.

I would think that having this plot in Enterprise (assuming that it carrys on for the rest of the series) would make a 'Time Travel' series in the future less likely.

There were rumors about a Starfleet Academy series at one time. Could such a series be done without turning it into 90210?

That was the original point of this thread. Last time there was speculation about a new series, the discussions were all about either:

a) Starfleet Academy, or

b) Timeships from the far future.

The 'Retro' Trek idea came out of nowhere.

I really wanted to see if we could come up with some new ideas -- like the Dyson Sphere/ Ringworld one.

Brannon Braga and Rick Berman say that they never had a Starfleet Academy script --- but Harve Bennett (Wrath of Khan) is meant to have had one much earlier.

I think it would be a little juvenile.
'90210'??
I would think it would be more like 'Smallville', with a young Kirk, Spock, Gary Mitchell and McCoy.

The Time Travel idea, if it continues to be incorporated into 'Enterprise' would not be used so soon again.

So any more different ideas? Or is this the final fronteir for Trekdom?

Hmm...

How about a series where they're studying an alien species for possible inclusion into the Federation? Maybe the locals have some interesting technology, or psi-powers or something...

Yeah...LOL!

Maybe an interesting species of creatures on the planet too, perhaps that could be like Earth's myths...giant lizards resembling dragons for example.

Y'know, this would make a good fic idea...but I've got way too many fanfics and originals in progress as it is.

Does it have to be so new?

Afterall TNG and Enterprise are basically TOS with different people and bigger or smaller ships.

Unless we take the themes:
Enterprise is the beginning of greater things.
TOS, when there were still things to discover.
TNG, When the Federation is at the height of its power and glory.

Which leaves the next as a series on the demise of the Federation.

If there is to be a series 6 immediately, then I would prefer 'mini-series' to put some flesh onto the things they keep hinting at. say two/three years (say 39 episodes)

It means they can have a sensible Academy series, or one covering the Rommulan wars, or even about a culture judging if its interests are served in the Federation.

If all that fails. Let's just have a ten year break to make up for them trying to run too many at once.

Interesting ideas, Ray.

But what would replace the Federation? Surely those would be dark days...but maybe like Star Wars, it would eventually be replaced by something like the New Republic, after new heroes thwarted the bad guys.

Yes, the Federation has lasted a long time when you consider all the bickering that takes place between members, not to mention the galaxy wide conflicts and wars of recent history. It must have a really rock solid foundation to remain in place so long. It is probably just the perfect society.

It would probably be done like Andromeda, but with a bigger budget.

A few individuals hankering after something they don't remember.

I can see an Empire-like upheaval happening in the Federation. History has shown that no society is immune to revolution, if the leader is charismatic enough. Would make a good series.

Think you are correct.

By and large civilisations go through four phases before collapse.
Barbarisim, Civilisation, Decadence, Revoloution.

Arguably:
Enterprise is the equivalent of barbarisim. Finding there is somebodyelse out there.
TOS takes us into civilization. Extending the influence of the Federation.
TNG sees the beginning of decadence. We have the Maqui, Insurrection and nothing new.

The time scales work fairly well too (2-300 years). Tying quite nicely with the British Empire.

Well, I haven't been watching much of Enterprise, but mostly because it was running back-to-back with my other favorite show. If they move it to Friday nights next season, I'd start watching it again.

As for future shows, they'd have to get a totally new concept to make it a success, I think. A lot of the fans I know are bored with Enterprise because there's not much new that hasn't already been done on one of the other series.

Maybe a time travel series? They have links on both Voyager & Enterprise to a time-travel division of Starfleet. Or something completely different. Not a Starfleet Academy show like 90210 in space, though. That I could live without.

LOL, I just noticed I had 1701 posts. And I just posted in a Trek thread. Heh heh.

Yes, I've been staring at my computer too long, why do you ask?
