It seems clear that Jonas will take the vacancy on the team.

Opinions? Impressions of the character?

I am really starting to like him! He seems like a great character, i am really looking foward to seeing more of him . I started to like him only in the last episode (Redemption), i really didn't like him in Meridian. I guess it is easier to judge him as a new character on the show and not as ''Daniel's replacement''. People who don't do this will always hate him , no matter how great or bad the character is. As i said although i will REALLY miss Daniel (being a huge MS fan) i am really looking foward to seeing him on season 6!

Jonas

I'm giving myself a couple of episodes to see how he works in.

He's a little too much IMHO. He's stronger than Teal'c, smarter than Sam, cracks more jokes than Jack, and can absorb 35 years worth of knowledge in 3 months. Yeah, right. In fanfic such characters are known as 'Mary Sues'.

Glad you mentioned "Mary Sue"

Sound vaguely familiar...?

"...The male counterpart, sometimes called Marty Sam, can also be found, often springing from the pens of male fanfic writers. Marty Sam always comes out on top. For example, he's the handsome young Private who tells Commander Ivanova that she's about to make a grave mistake, and intervenes to stop her from her disasterous course of action. If he lives, he gets all kinds of praise, which can include getting a night of wild passion with the ice-cold commander (who was openly bisexual and old enough to have been his babysitter, but that's moot.) If he ends up dead, he gets a postumous medal of honor and becomes some kind of martyr; a legend in his own time. Sure, bad things can happen to Marty Sam from time to time, but as with his twin sister, Mary Sue, it is a cold day in hell when an author is going to let anything permanently endanger his beloved character. Even if it means making the rest of the cast look like a bunch of dorks..."

I think that people think too much about the whole thing and need to just watch the show as a TV show. It's meant to be a pleasant escape from the day to day lives we all have to live.

Personally? I guess I don't particularly see the problems with someone writing a 'Mary Sue or a Marty Sam or whatever they are called. If a fan wants to express themselves in such a way, then you may need to understand that this is perhaps the *only* way they may be able to express their feelings or hopes about themselves.

Judge not, lest ye be judged.

We all have secret hopes and aspirations and even perhaps desires for those things we know to be unattainable by us or out of our reach. Sometimes, putting it down on paper is a way of making oneself feel a little more positive. Sometimes lonely people will populate their own little universe with a soceity where they themselves are worthy of attention. It can be lonliness, a lack of attention or just plain frustration that makes them feel like that. Who are we to sit in judgement?

Jonas is just a character. I think he's okay and because of his brief past history with SG1 and Daniel, he's trying a little too hard to impress. As any of us would if we wanted to be accepted.

At the end of the day....he's in the episodes and whether those who dislike him continue to watch or not....it's a moot point. He's there, by the order of TPTB and no amount of discussing is going to change that.

Yes the team dynamic will change, and it will probably spoil things for those who watch Stargate simply because they loved Jack, Sam, Daniel and Teal'c, but MS has left, Daniel has ascended and for better or for worse, everything moves on. C'est la vie!

Just my opinion for what it's worth (actually, it's worth quite a lot to me really ;))

i thought i'd hate him!! coz i thought no-one would sufficiently replace the character of danny. then i saw redemption, and i thought ""wow!!!! he's not too bad!!"" hes actually quite sweet, and i like his efforts to be earthling, like the crossing fingers and stuff, like teal'c does. i think hes lovely, and he'll fit in just right.

and im going to have to say SOMETHING about that little b:blpaw::blpaw::blpaw::blpaw::blpaw:d Mackay. hes a pain in the a:blpaw::blpaw:e, and i really dislike him. he annoyed the hell outta me in 48 hours, and he still does. then when same walked in ahd he was saying that she was sexy, i was like ""strangle him, i hate him!!!""

over and out

This is logic?!

So let me get this straight: If the producers and writers decide to change Jack O'Niel into a dwarf ballerina, Teal'c picks up a harem and takes up multi-level marketing, Sam dies and Jonas becomes President of the United States, we all need to accept it as the immutable wisdom of The Powers That Be, without question, and give it a chance. Because who knows? We might like it. And no complaining, ya hear?

Maybe in your reality. In mine, I reserve the right to object to the degradation of one of my favorite TV series. And that has very little to do with Daniel Jackson/Michael Shanks, because I am *not* a MS or DJ fan. I'm a fan of the show, and the departure of Shanks was only a symptom of the problems that began in Season 4.

Come to think of it, the above changes might be more interesting that what I was exposed to, last Friday night.

Calm it down a bit Bizarro.....nobody is saying that you have to like it, or have to watch it....and certainly nobody is saying that you shouldn't make your feelings known. And in fact the feelings of all concerned have been constantly aired over and over again in post mortems on every single Stargate fandom list. It's not like no one has been allowed to say anything.

The fact is that no matter what you say, it's a done deed. Do you really think that any amount of complaining and campaigning by the fans is going to work with Brad Wright and Co? It's the last Season and they are doing pretty much what they want and what we think doesn't seem to matter a damn.

I don't think it's the show it was when it started off either. But I sure as hell don't think that bringing Daniel back or not letting Jonas be a member of SG1 is going to bring back the show we obviously both miss.

I'm not sure what would pull it back in my view. I certainly believe that the awesome concept of the Stargate and potential of the show that Brad, RDA, Jonathan Glassner & Co held in their hands at the very start has nowhere near been fulfilled. Instead it's a damn space soap opera with the fab four saving the world every week. How boring is that?

That's how I feel about it, but who in hell would listen to me?

Actually, Anni: yes I do. I called MGM last Friday and actually spoke to Hank Cohen who told me that there were several episodes planned with Michael Shanks.

I like to think that fan response had something to do with that.;)

Yes...except...

Yes, Hank Cohen said there *were definitely* 2 more episodes written for Daniel Jackson...and then fan journalist A.J. Mosby asked MGM publicist Vigars yesterday, who absolutely swore there wouldn't be two more, as does Joe Mallozzi. You would at least think they'd coordinate their baloney.

If it means anything, I agree with you Anni about the wasted potential.

One question, just why is Jonas so eager to join SG1 when it's been made clear to him that he's not welcome? There are supposed to be at least 17 teams, plus the Alpha Site, you'd think that he could find a place on another team if he wanted to so badly. Why force yourself on people who have made it clear they don't like you?

Yep.. Great big GREEN ones. That's what they listen to.

I'd very much like to think that the fan reaction were partially responsible for Hank Cohen saying that to you, and I'm sure they aren't completely ignoring it. But I worked for a year with these movie and TV execs and they are a piece of work. They are utterly charming without a doubt and certainly to your face and in public, but please don't be fooled by that. As Texane says, they have their eyes on the big green ones, so they are going to try to keep the fans happy.....on the surface at least. You may have to face the fact that what happens in reality may be a little different from what they're saying to your face now. These guys are dictated to by the money people and it's the money people who provide the wherewithal to make movies and TV shows.

I'm sure they've recognised that MS may well be a bankable asset, but it isn't just you guys that they have to convince. There is a whole movie and TV viewing populace out there who have to be convinced.

And this is of course, presuming that the *only* bankable asset Stargate has is Michael Shanks. Because this is the impression I am getting from the fans and I wonder if this message is being received loud and clear by TPTB......that Michael Shanks IS Stargate SG1.

There are quite a few guys at work who like Stargate and we had a discussion the other day about his character and the actor who plays it. A lot of them are aware of the furore surrounding MS and also the hatred towards the new character. Unfortunately, the message coming over to them.....and to me....is that MS is principally loved because he's cute and eye candy, and that his main stem of fans are female. Whereas most men like the show because of the idea of the Stargate itself, the bad guys and the technology. So I don't know what message MGM is getting apart from the fact that there are a whole heap of hysterical hormonal women out there gagging for just a glimpse of Daniel again.

I'm pretty sure that this is not the impression that fandom wants to give it it?

So.....I shall wait and see. I can certainly believe that the fervour surrounding the lack of Daniel on the team and the introduction of poor old Jonas, could lead to the demise of a show or a concept which had amazing potential at first. With all the **** surrounding this issue and the constant battering of the fans, it's going to get to the stage where *nobody* in Moviedom or the TV world is going to want to touch it, because they'll consider it a potential problem show.

I'm just basing this on the experience of having worked with senior movie execs, the legal and money guys in Hollywood. There are projects which they consider contentious and won't touch with a ten foot barge pole. Let's just hope that Stargate doesn't fall foul of this view.

Shanks wasn't bad to look at, but if you are a fan of the tech at all, or you simply liked to watch what different writers could come up with each time the Stargate opened up to a new world, you liked his character because DJ was always around when new civilizations (and their toys) were being figured out - how did the big puzzle work? DJ was there during the really good epys.
