New Member of SG-1 Jonas Quinn

vagaries of scheduling

Because of the vagaries of scheduling, I find that one station here in the DC area has just concluded Season Four (so far, so good) and the Sci-Fi Channel has just started running SG1 -- starting with Season Six. So we don't see Season Five until sometime this fall (I think, hope).

Meanwhile I gather that DJ has heroically transcended to be one with Oma Desala and that an otherwise eager to please young man named Jonas is probably meant to replace DJ on SG1. I do not envy the actor's task in creating in the last season a character that could rival that of MS's work in the preceding five!

What were they thinking? Much of this shows a general decline of the production and does not bode well for the future film. Is DJ meant to return in the film? Will SG1 then have five members, assuming that Jonas remains as part of the cast?

Enquiring minds want to know.

oh lordy girlfriend- it's been a long, ugly and emotional debate. if you're not already a part of it i would strongly advise you to just watch the show and form your own opinions. if you would like to get caught up on what happened in season 5 you can check out the stargate primer over at gateworld.

Gategeek, you put it all too well.

I too thought I would hate Jonas, god knows I did in 'Meridian'! But he's kinda grown on me. I've only seen 1 ep. but he seems like a genuinely nice guy. He can't replace Daniel because Daniel was the original guy but he's not doing a bad job so far. He seems to get on with Sam (there were absolutely NO romantic implications in that sentence, I'm an s/j er all the way!) and he's able to strike up a conversation with Teal'c! That's gotta b worth high praise! I've never even heard Teal'c speak to another member of the SGC ( 'cept SG-1, Hammond and Fraiser) when it wasn't necessary! I think he's gonna b ok. Plus HAVE U SEEN THOSE ARMS?????? They're like tree trunks! I'm SURE they weren't like that b4!;)

It appears that many fans find Nemic less irritating than they anticipated. (just think how bad it would have been if McKay had been made a member of the team. I think he would have been killed by his own troops . . . )

Getting Used To S6

I've seen several posts that Jonas was "annoying at first, but grows on you." Having not seen S5, I can only judge by "Redemption 1&2" and so far, I'm fine with Jonas.

But other details still have me lost. Who is this McKay character? When was he introduced and why? And what is going on between him and Sam?

McKay is such an annoying schnerk, her makes Q look polite. :dead:

On my list of characters I detest, McKay has jumped to the top of the list.

Probably because I know someone like him.

Jonas Quinn doesn't seem too bad. Although he reminds me of an eager puppy sometimes. I expect to see his tail start wagging when he gets a crumb of attention from the regulars.

I think it'll take time for him to find his place. We'll see what chemistry develops here.

And Michael Shanks, where ever you are and wherever you go, we wish you well.:D

Casting Considerations

Some characters are created to be annoying to give the series a level of tension or edginess. A casts can become so comfortable with each other and the viewers that it makes it hard for the writers to produce dialogue showing opposing points of view or differents aspects of character.

So McKay is annoying. Certainly lets us see another side of Sam. I don't recall too many people she really couldn't stand and she puts him down very well.
And Jonas is eager, but he has to have somewhere for his character to go and only one season to get there.

After two episodes, i can honestly say jonas is growing on me. He does have some similarities to the character of DJ...yet some differences as well. Redemption one and two did a good job of showing him sort of easing his way in. I can't wait for descent and frozen to see how he acts and reacts on a mission.

as to McKay...oh yeah, in 48 hours he was a complete and total jerk...but....he's changed in Red 1&2.

He pushes Sam, he makes her think...and i think he brings out a rarely seen side of her. She's having to prove herself because of him....and i think it's a good thing.
I hope he comes back.

Bear in mind, i love sarky sam and she was in rare form in red 1&2...to me it makes her more human and interesting to see her get annoyed and ticked off. She also got to show some of her funny side, which is long overdue.

There are enough McKays in real life that I feel no need to watch or listen to any more of them in my spare time. And as for a sarky Sam, I say she should use the sarkiness on O'N.

I loved Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson and now like Jonas, and Corin. I think he's a sweet guy who's been given a very hard job to do. You think the whole entire cast and crew don't know how we all feel?? I can tell you, they do. All they can do is try to make a good show, stay true to what THEY want to accomplish and make the fans happy as much as possible. Of course they can't make everyone happy, but I know they are trying to do their best. Stargate SG-1 is one of the best shows on TV and I for 1 think they all deserve a standing ovation for all their hard work in giving us a show we all love and feel this strongly about. If we didn't care about the show and love it this much we wouldn't all be here doing this every day now would we?

I am glad these forums are here for us to discuss the shows we love but when people take everything so personally and make it about one upping each other, it makes me wonder what they think this is all about. I like to come here to enjoy myself, to chat with people who share a love for the same things I do. But lately I've seen way too much rude behavior and people being just downright nasty. I see no reason for this in these forums. People do have a right to their own opinions but if all these forums were put here for were for people to bitch about everything then why would anyone want to come here? I know I don't want to listen to people put everything down and tell others to shut up. I have to say I'm quite dissappointed in the way things have become and find it hard to keep coming back. It's too bad, because I liked it here. I hope in time things change but have to say I don't think I'll be coming by much anymore.

For all the people I've met here that have been nice, thanks!!!:D

I have read and re-read through the posts on this thread and as far as I can see. everyone has behaved rather well. They have posted their opinions, which is after all what these forums and lists are for, but no one has actually jumped down anyone else's throat. Therefore I am perturbed by Shauri feeling that she has to make the point about rudeness and one upmanship.

Yes, without a doubt there has been rudeness, and this has been stamped on, but usually when the rudeness has been directed towards another poster. This is not allowed under Padder's rules. However, someone posting a contentious opinion about the show and then a discussion even though it may be heated follows. There are going to be contentious postings Shauri......not everyone is a 'Gate Groupie' (And I mean this with humour and not sarcastically! I think your title is definitely supportive of your favourite show!).

You said that people are entitled to their own opinions, whether good or bad. but then say that if the forums were meant for complaining no one would want to visit. Perhaps you should take a good look around. There are a lot of people who love and loved the show and are now keenly disappointed at the direction it has taken. Where else do they go to vent their disappointment? Because you appear to be saying that these forums would be a nice place only if everyone gushed about how wonderful the show is. Debate is something human beings like to do. If we all sat here warbling about how wonderful the show, the actors, the producers etc etc were, then it wouldn't be half so interesting as it is when people are discussing and airing their views.

You also say that the actors etc know how we all feel? How do they know? Have they actually told you that they know? I still think, and this is not being rude to them at all, that it is just another job, for which they get paid. When it's over, there will be other jobs. I don't think for one minute that these people eat, sleep, breathe and live Stargate at all......certainly not in the way that many of the fans do. They're probably wondering what the big fuss is.

Not coming to the forums is of course your prerogative, however, it's unlikely that people are going to stop debating the Stargate issues. I personally enjoy many of the comments, debates and issues that are brought up, and other people's answers to them. I would find a constant 'Stargate is wonderful and everything they do is wonderful' list rather tedious and boring.

Opinions and debates

I enjoy the fact that fans can discuss and debate personal opinions here in a safe environment. As some know, I am a stanch fan of 'Daniel Jackson' and Michael Shanks. Others are not. I am still holding my opinion on where the show is going with it's change in cast members. Others are not.

But differences are the basis of humanity. Without them we wouldn't have wonderful things like regional foods, music, art, etc.

As long as folks are polite, I welcome debate.

Go, Anni, go Anni, go Anni, go Anni . . .

I reread the thread in its entirety as well. I found nothing but enthusiastic debate. And we have certainly had otherwise, not only when MS left the show, but even about the length of Sam's hair! There are times when the forum seems a bit negative overall because the last few epys were considered lousy or even boring . . . many things have been debated here.

If you're looking for a Stargate lovefest, I doubt you'll find it here. Our members are intelligent, fun-loving fans who enjoy debating the show with other fans. As long as there are no flames and/or attacks upon other members (which will be taken seriously and dealt with), expect for the debates to go on, and on . . . including those with which you don't agree.

Expand your Universe . . . wherever that universe may be.

About "nasty" opinions

Hello, Sha'uri's Smile --

I've felt that way too sometimes, but I then consider that I know next to nothing about many of the members here. Some sound very juvenile and others of us are -- well, more mature. Growing old may be mandatory, but growing up is entirely optional :)

I read carefully those opinions that are well considered and objective. I skim the rest and ignor those that are just silly. I find most of the discussion interesting with many different perspectives.

Nice, webmouse.

A good rule of thumb for all of us on every forum. Nice. :star:
