MacGyver? Slightly O.T.

There were those who said that James Bond had to be played by Sean Connery, but the franchise has done fine with other actors and Connery's career really blossomed after he was able to detach himself from Bond. His greatest films like "Wind and the Lion," "Robin and Marian," "The Man Who Would Be King," "Hunt for Red October," "The Last Crusade," and "Finding Forrester" all came after he left the Bond role behind -- despite the fan uproar.

Has it occurred to anyone that RDA might want to move on to other projects as well without having McGyver as his constant shadow?

Typecasting by directors is bad enough, but typecasting by loving fans is far worse.

Reality or fantasy

I hate these film executives. Where they came from? Did people get old in theirs planet???

Who wants to be deceived over and over or wants to run away of own reality sees this kind of thing!

RDA still is the only logical choice to play Mac. IT'S LIFE! IT'S NORMAL, besides he still on track and the gray hair is pure charming. Harrison Ford is older than RDA and still planning another Indiana Jones.

Macguiver never was a super hero, he was more like an anti hero, he never need musscles so much, he had BRAIN and never said stupid things. It was totally different!

PS: MS and CN are good actors. There is no difference between them for me (sorry MS's fans that hate CN. Why????) and they will make a god Job on it if RDA didn't had made already.

Macguiver will ever be RDA.

Give me a break!

RDA has expressed a desire to retire from acting, to spend more time with his family and on environmental projects. Doesn't sound like he wants a full-time role in another TV series. The man has a life and ought to be allowed to live it however he sees fit.

Would you wish to see the "McGyver" project completely scrapped because RDA chooses not to be in it?

Actually, I think I prefer no MacGyver than MacGYver without RDA... Thay could use an actor related to the original series... like Mac's son... SAM... they could come up with a story around SAM, with a cameo from RDA... It's just a thought... As cliché as it is!

Much as we all associate certain roles with certain actors, I'm prepared to keep an open mind. I'll watch whatever they produce. It will work or it won't, thus rising or falling on its own merit.

I've lived long enough to remember the arguments about Bond without Connery, a captain of the Enterprise who was not named Kirk, and many other such changes -- good shows could have been lost if the producers actually were at the mercy of the whim of the audience.

So let them produce whatever McGyver they wish with whatever cast they choose. If you don't like it or can't accept it without RDA, turn the channel.

I'm a little split with this idea.

I want RDa to play Macgyver. I can only see him as playing Macgyver. Of course that comes from only seeing him play Macgyver. I was like that over highlander too. I felt that Conner was the best and only McCloud. But I watched the show and I like Duncan now too. :) You can hate something so much and then see it and fall in love with it. That's probably whats going to happen with me again.

I don't want to see the new Macgyver movie w/o RDA but I probably will, based on the sole purpose that RDA will be n it. Who knows what may happen.

And then on the other hand, RDA is getting a little old to be playing Macgyver, not that i'm saying he doesn't look as good but that he can't do a lot of the action scenes. In Stargate he's had to cut down on some of them because of his knee injury. A new younger Macgyver may not be a bad idea. I like maconeill2001's idea too. Have the movie being about his son. It'll be like young Indiana Jones or James bond Jr and stuff like that.

oh well.

Sorry, you've all got it wrong. If the Hollywood habit of miscasting roles remains true then they'll have "THE ROCK" playing MacGyver

We are at the mercy of TPTB and the casting agents :(

But we are the audience and have the final say. We watch it or we don't. Our choice. Power to the people!

Too Old?

I was also a big MacGyver fan and WHO is too old? That is such a problem with society today saying people are too old for certain parts! * harumph *:p

Just someone try and tell Harrison Ford that when he makes the next Indiana Jones Movie and he'd slug you one! :)

I'm the same, he made the role and anyone else playing it, i feel, would ruin it. Although the idea of his son is a good one.

I'd just like to see that.   No offense to any "ROCK" lovers out there but i don't think he'd be able to think up some of the things Mac did.

The Rock won't have to think up anything. That's the scriptwriter's job. :D

Point. But he's got to make the audience believe he's thought it up.

keltikkitty:aliengray

And that is the actor's job. I sincerely doubt that the Rock can be convincingly clever. Strong, yes. Warrior material, definitely. Quick thinking scientifically gifted gadget guru, uh . . . the mind boggles at the concept. :D

Exactly. Although I haven't seen the Scorpion King, I don't think he is that convincing of an actor. Especially if he was trying to convince you that he was (how did you say it) a quick thinking scientifically gifted gadget guru. :D

That's what's wrong with this society today. Always throwing away anyone over 40! Okay, Rick may be a little long in the tooth, :kisses: but HE IS MacGUYVER! No one will ever replace him! Now, his son could be a young Mac, and Rick could make appearances now and then. BTW, where did Mac get a nephew from? Wasn't he an only child?!

The Rock as Mac???! No way. Although The Rock is a hottie, I think the network bigwigs will get some young, 20-something, unknown hottie. Who, btw, will not grab my attention whatsoever! But I will watch it only if/when Rick makes an appearance.

Hey, maybe Ben Browder can play the younger MacGuyver!

I understand that Young MacGyver is going to be the *nephew* of R.D.A.'s MacGyver - *not* his son.

So are they going to retro-engineer a sibling for him or just ignore canon, as I believe MacGyver was an only child?

Best wishes,
Hatshepsut

But RDA has stated his wish to retire, to spend more time with his family and his environmental projects, so if this project is to go forward, if a new generation is to be introduced to MacGuyver, then someone will have to replace RDA in the role. It may be Mac the Next Generation or a remake of the original series, but we should give whatever it is a chance.

After all if I had stuck with my original reaction that only Spader could play Daniel Jackson I would have missed five years of delight at watching Michael Shanks in the role -- and all the wonders of SG1. I'm even willing to accept Jonas to just to keep watching the show.

Entertainment requires some level of trust and the risk is entirely on the production side. If you don't like what you see, then there's plenty else to watch.
