Did Obi Wan tell Luke a pack of Lies in ANH?

Having just watched all six movies (pretty much end-to-end) whilst on the treadmill (over two weeks, in 45-60 minute bursts), you do notice some of the little clashes. One that's not mentioned above is Luke to Leia in "Jedi": tell me what you remember about your mother, not much - she died when I was young.... etc. Young?! You were minutes old!! (etc.)

As I said earlier, I began this thread on 10th September 2002, before Episode III was released. I wanted to know how people thought Lucas would resolve some of these anomalies. He didn't, he just ignored them, and he created even more such as that one - "she died when I was young".

It is a fairly pointless exercise to nitpick all the continuity errors in a series of films, but I will just say one thing. I would expect to see them in a series such as the Alien Quadrilogy, or the Terminator films, or in Planet of the Apes - because they were made ad hoc, and never originally conceived as a series. Star Wars is different, precisely because supposedly Lucas did conceive it as a double trilogy. Therefore, you would not expect to see such blatant errors in the continuity.

What he conceived and what he was capable of doing are two entirely separate things.
If he conceived Star Wars now with the technology he has, I imagine it would be a different story, plus he had no real intention of doing Ep I - III when he started off.

And some things were probably still slightly vague when he wrote 4-6. Saying, for example, that your mother died when you were young is a generic statement that basically just means you were raised by non-parents. It doesn't necessarily mean anything more. The problem was that he needed something momentous at the end of 3, to trigger Anakin's final flip: he came up with the threat of Padme dying. That added specifics to the previous generic, but in doing so made the generic slightly inaccurate. But hey - it's a good ole story and fine to watch on a Sunday afternoon in winter.
