After I had seen the movie I thought it had the potential for further movies or a series.
So when I read that Richard Dean Anderson would star in it, it was for me the cherry on the cake.

So how did you become a Gater?

Please share your stories.

:twirl:

Holiday morning viewing on Channel four consisted of an epsiode of this every day, I just started watching and got hooked. Ended up buying most of the dvds to feed my obsession :D

Well, I first watched the movie and loved it and when I heard they were making a series out of it I thought: Ewww! Please not!
Because I usually don't like TV series made out of good movies (sorry, don't like Buffy or Highlander)
But when I heard RDA would star in it I couldn't wait to watch the pilot...and was hooked. Never missed an episode since then...:D ;)

I was thrilled with the film and when the TV series was announced I thought I'd at least watch the pilot -- usually film to TV doesn't do much for me, but I try to be fair. Once I caught sight of Michael Shanks I just kept on watching.

The stories were good, the characters well-developed, and at least until S5 the show seemed to have a thematic purpose. Now I feel they're off track, but I keep watching -- ever the optimist. When it really becomes too painful to continue I'll turn to something else, but for now I'll stick to it.

I'm a huge sci-fi fan and I loved the movie. I usually don't spend much time in front of the television, but I never miss an episode. I ended up getting a Stargate tattoo on my back, not because I'm obsessed with the show (okay, maybe a little), but because I love science fiction.

When the movie was introduced, it provided an interesting premise with two good characters. The "bad guys" had great promise, and the "twist" on history was great! Although I like RDA's portrayal of O'Neill, like others, it took me some time to become accustomed to a new actor playing the part. This was helped in that Spader and Shanks both portrayed one of the original characters in a similar manner, and two new characters were being introduced, all as part of a team.

The team-based foundation of the series is why I continue to watch the show, even though I am dissatisfied with seasons 5 and 6.

I saw the movie when it first came out and to be honest I wasnt impressesd. Sci fi to me meant flying on space ships not visiting backward cultures and blowing up pyramids, I thought the idea of the gate was good but didnt like the way the movie ended up. So when they did a series I didnt bother watching it. But then satellite tv started showing it every day at dinner time, so watched it for the sake of watching something. got hooked and became a stargate addict (still hate the movie though)

First Trip Through The Gate

I first got interested in SG-1 because of the movie, which my father has on video and I thought was really good.
I first found out about SG-1 after seeing a trailer for it on a Babylon 5 video. I thought it looked pretty exciting and adventurous. I soon noticed the first few videos appearing on the shelves in video shops, but didn't buy them as I didn't have much money back then. Thankfully, I found out it would be shown on Channel 4 soon and so I would be able to see it. Unfortunately, the pilot was on on a Sunday, when I would be travelling back home from visiting relatives and so I missed it! I think the second episode was on the next day so I watched that. I don't think I had much of a problem getting into the story. At first I thought Teal'c was one of the Jaffa from the first film (one of those was black and bald). But, I soon found out that he wasn't. I watched the rest of the first series and gradually became more and more hooked. I eventually rented out the pilot and absolutely loved it!

Now, after having seen Seasons 1-5, I think that it's on the same level of excellence as Star Trek (in my opinion, no other series had matched it's brilliance, not even Babylon 5).:D I now try to get my hands on every bit of Stargate SG-1 merchandise I can! I have all of the DVDs, two patches, the whole of Season 1 on video. I even have a little model Chulak Stargate complete with base, two Serpent Guards and a DHD which I bought at a Collector's Fair and assembled and painted myself.

I started watching it because of my mum...she was a big fan and I bought her the first tape of season one and I had to watch it with her one day...from that day on I was hook and have never missed one!

First off, I was up real late at night and I saw what I know believe to be "The Serpants Lair." I had no clue what it was but I wanted to see it agina but I could never bring myself to get up that early in the morning. It was like 2 in the morning. So I forgot about it.

About 6-7 months later, I was over at a friends house and she mentioned stargate and I said I had no clue what it was. She ordered me to sit down and she went over to her uncle's house and borrowed the tape. Since then, I've been watching SG-1 faithfully. I have most of Season 2-4 on tape. Mr brother has bought me the DVD of the First Season and I am now watching the first season on Sci-fi. Now I'm a little older and I can stay up till 1 in the morning to catch the repeats. :D

Saw the movie

I'd seen and enjoyed the movie so when the series came on I gave it a look. To be honest it didn't make that much of an impact on me but I watched it if it came on. Then Sky One started showing an episode every day and suddenly I was making sure I saw them and was seeking out websites. The next thing I knew I had bought a DVD player, imported the 1st season box set from the US and started collecting the DVD releases in the UK. I realized I was addicted.

Why do I like it? The team as family - excellent characters played by talented actors and some good sci-fi. I'm also a sucker for combat gear and honking big guns - what can I say? I'm a simple girl!

p.s. I love these emoticons!

I saw the Stargate film when I was 13 and I liked it very much ... than I saw in TV programe, that there is also a serie...I didn't wait a second ;-)

I loved the movie when it came out.
Then, one day, about two years ago, I was over at a friends house and he switched on the TV to watch Stargate, at first I wondered why he was so desperate to watch it (since he had the film on video) and he explained it was the TV series. I watched the episode and was instantly hooked.

I was kinda late getting into it, but have certainly made up for any lost time since.:D

I started watching after reading a fan fic. It was a crossover between Stargate and The Sentinel, which I like. I had never seen Stargate, but I have now become totally and thouroughly hooked. I am really glad the Scifi Channel has started showing them from the beginning. It gives me a chance to catch up and tape them all. I love this show now!!

I think it really helps to watch a series from the beginning and I'm glad that SciFi is running everything from the pilot on. I don't watch a lot of TV series -- time constraints -- so I only commit to a very few. If the pilot draws me in, then I stay (and there's another hour of my week spoken for :) )

If the pilot doesn't catch my attention or I come in later in the season and can't follow the story development, then I'm unlikely to become a faithful fan.

There are a lot of assuredly wonderful programs that I have either never seen at all or seen an episode now and then, never really figuring out what was going on or the relationships between the characters. Thus I am shockingly ignorant of "Babylon 5", "Battlestar Gallactica", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", and "The X-Files." For one reason or another I just never caught on. The various "Star Trek" series have always had my attention, probably because their version of the universe remains familiar throughout the years. Also, despite constant cast changes, I watched "Dr. Who" as a child living in England (it was the 2nd Doctor then) and was delighted when many years later the program was picked up by PBS. It took some sorting out because the show had moved on to Doctor #4, but I remained an avid viewer until the show vanished into the mists of constant reruns.

But from the first mention of a TV series based on "Stargate" I knew I would be watching, at least for the first few shows. If the team gelled and the stories floated high above the usual drek, I'd be a loyal viewer. So here I am still watching, even tolerating the loss of my favorite character. With luck and foresight, the producers will known when to exit gracefully and move on to feature films, and spin-offs that will do justice to the TV series and the original movie that spawned it all.

I vote because of the movie but I have to added the reason number two because of Richard Dean Anderson. After the movie I definitley have to see the series and love that they continue with all the things I love of the movie. But seeing RDA as Colonel O'Neill have to be another great reason for me because I love him as Mcgyver and was really glad to have the opportunity to see him again in other role. :p

Loved the movie. Saw the first episode of the series, thought it was okay, but nothing special. Didn't care about RDA being in it. I thought the darker more tortured portrayal of Jack by Kurt Russell was more logical but understood that for a series, it would have been too tedious to carry the character on in that vein, so I ignored that. Even though RDA still irritates the hell out of me, all the time. Kept watching it because I thought the Goa'uld were coo1, at first at least, then when they started killing them off, I lost interest. I started watching it again when they introduced Cronus and Yu. Then they killed more Goa'uld off, started Stargate - The X Files and my interest has waned a little.

Now I don't know why I watch it really. But I still love the movie!

I think my friends had to tow me back to the car by the hand I was so taken with the movie. I was keen to know how the special effects had been done. And I think I was mooning for that Spader dude. It took me awhile to get over him. But the effects still are impressive.

However, I don't think I found out about the series until mid-season two was syndicated to regular TV. I think I was a big X-files fan. It's sad that the station here felt Stargate was Saturday afternoon stuff. I worked afternoon and nights on many weekends. What saved me was the midnight weekend repeat. I'd get home from my theater gig and get to unwind with some SF. Not helping matters was that the Fox station moved its timeslot around. I'd turn on the TV thinking it would be on and it would be the toaster oven paid programme, or baseball, or football playoffs. Still happens to the late night slot. Last night we lost half of Red Sky because of baseball playoffs running long. But for being hooked... I think Gamekeeper has that distinction, later Holiday and Nemesis became my favs. An example of wickedly good characterzation acting and a good cliffhanger does wonders for me.

I had seen the movie and loved it so when i saw ads in TV guide about the series I got my tapes ready. The fact that RDA was in it was just a bonus!!!!! (After all, I loved him in McGyver, so why not in Scifi). I haven't been disappointed yet!
