Lian Hearn

Me i like japanese culture and history alot which is why i have read countless mangas about samurai, ninjas etc

But this is my first book with samurai's,ninjas and japanese history.

Other than that its a good story.

Hearn does a good job telling it and paints an interesting world.

I'm not hugely into Japanese culture but I read the second one then the third. I felt that althogh they don't go into great detail, the first one is vaguely outlined to the point that because I knew what happened at the end I felt I didn't need to read the first one.

I thoughrougly enjoyed the two books and really like the way they ended. However, I say "Harsh Cry Of The Heron" and it looked like a continuation, using some or all of those charcters. I liked it to end with Brilliance Of The Moon

Have read the first three books and am waiting for Harsh Cry Of The Heron to make it here in paperback.

I've always liked books set in old Japan so these books were a joy to find. They are well written and as Connavar has said, the books paint a very good, detailed picture of the times.

Lian Hearn is clearly a lover of Old Japan since her pseudonym comes from Lafcadio Hearn who came to Japan to work and ended up staying.

I just finished the second book and thought it was even better than the first.

It was great seeing Takeo,Kaede struggling through their world. So many interesting characters. Cant wait to see how Takeo deals with Otori Clan cheifs and later on how he will fight against The Tribe.

I didnt really feel for the poor kidnapped girl Kaede was in the first book. But i liked seeing her grow in to the strong women in the second book doing everything she can for her family in a world that doesnt favor her gender.

Hearn has impressed me alot with her writing ability that will i will enjoy reading the rest of the series and her future works. Other than writing a very good story and characters, vivid world she is very good prose wise. She writes so beautifuly many times.

I hope she writes in the future other stories set in Old Japan and not only a prequal of this story.

hi i read the first two books a while back can someone remind me because i cant remember exactly in which book Fujiwara's house collapses and why and is this how Kaede burnt her face? also is it true that Fujiwara's doctor is Kaede's lover? how does Takeo kill Akio? what happens to Kenji?

That didnt happen in the first two books i have read so it must be in the third or the fourth ;)
