Okay, so Gatecon goes from the 11th - 14th.

What happens on the 11th? I though the actual con only went from Friday to Sunday?

It actually starts on the Thursday with registration and then the Cocktail party later that night.

Con

Registration and the cocktail party are on Thursday, Panels and such start on Friday.

I won't be at the con because my work commitments won't allow it. However I may pop in and say Hi to folk who are around during that weekend. There are a few people whose acquaintance I would still like to make.......like Rowan and a few others.

You won't have me thrown out if I do that will you?

;) :D

I've not been to Gatecon before so I don't know the layout of the hotel, but should imagine you'll be able to get into parts of it, just not the rooms being used for con events. That's what usually happens...

Are you on the Gategoers list? There's a few things being planned in the weeks around if you can't come to the con itself.

Thanks Allan

Okay, so what time does that cocktail party start and is that included in the price of the ticket or is it something that you have to pay for seperatly?

Things.

The cocktail party is held in the main hall and is secured by doors. there will be our security folks checking badges so non-con folks won't be able to wander in. They can mingle with folks out in the hallway just outside, thought, so folks can get together that way.

The cocktail party *usually* starts around 7PM [1900]. Since this year we are only offering one level of ticket, the cost is included.

Con

I have the distinct advantage ov living within driving distance [about 3-some hours south]. If I had to fly in, I don't know if I'd be able to afford it.

CAN'T WAIT TO MEET YOU ROWAN AND ALL THE OTHER GUYS!!!

Cocktail party sounds fun! Who is usually there?

YEEHAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who's there ...

Well, each year's been a bit different. Each year at least one of the actors has been there - at least for a bit. But it's mainly made up of the con goers.

Hi ShelbyS, I'd say your questions have all been covered by Rowan or Allan but I'll add my 2 cents as I've been to all the cons too. The Thursday cocktail party is ok, but less and less of the guests have appeared each year. Last year I left early because none of the guests were showing up. The year before only Alexis Cruz came. So it's fun to eat and hang with friends but don't count on guests. It's better to meet up with friends and make new ones and enjoy the relaxed nature of it before it gets nuts during the con.

It's also cool to register early on thursday cause Friday it gets crazy. Anyone can come into the hotel but you can't get into any of the con rooms without a pass. But there's lots of lounges, restaurants and places to hang out in and meet people and possibly get a glimpse of a guest or 2. There's a pool and hot tub too if you wanna relax, and it just happens to be outside of where they do photo shoots and autographs. ;)

Gategoers and some of the other groups do stuff before and after the con so I'm sure you could do that if you wanted. And if you're a JR Bourne fan he has charity auctions and does some really fun stuff with the winners. Ok, that sounds bad, but you know what I mean, he does lunches, dinners, walks with his dog, stuff like that. Anyway, if you check around and keep up on the boards you'll find all kinds of cool stuff to do.

I live close to Canada too and drive about 2 and a half hours to the con otherwise it'd be hard to make it every year for me too. I also share a room with 2 people to save on the cost of the room.

And since I drive up I bring some of my own food, alcohol and do other stuff to save money. There's so much there to spend money on it can get very expensive very quick. But that's what makes it fun, they give you lots to do and let you get some personal time with the guests.

The Banquet is fun too and I'm guessing will be included with the ticket so everyone will be welcome. Which is very different from the other years as they changed the ticket style. I sure hope it works out as they used to only let the VIP ticket holders in and that was about 200 to 300 people and now if everyone's let in then it's gonna be cramped for sure, and whatever guests are there you won't be as able to talk to them or get a picture or anything as they'll be swamped by people. We'll see I guess.

Anyway, there's lots to do and much fun to be had by all. I always have a blast and look forward to meeting all you guys too.

Party on!!!!

Hey Kim/SS,

Thanks for that!

Trying to get all the info possible here. SOunds interesting. Looks like the party will be a great place to meet up with other fans and friends. :D

You guys are so lucky that you live so close. I have 20+ hours of travel time ahead of me. :( And for someone whose never travelled overseas before that's rather daunting.

Travel

I *do* understand, Shelby. I did it in reverse this last Jan when I went to BOBW in Sydney. It was about 20 hours all told.

This is pretty much one of the few cons I go to and I'm lucky it's near-by. I sometimes make MediaWestCon and that's about 6-8 hours by plane [depending on connections]. And a general SF one close to home, NorWestCon. Other than that, I don't get out much. ;)

You came out to Aus?

No kidding. Cool. Did you have a good time at the con?

I can't believe you were like a three hour drive away from me and Allan.

BOBW

I had an absolute blast!:D I came in a week early and hung out with net friends - got the local tour, ate and drank my way across Sydney and got to top the whole thing off with the con. I was sorry Chris Judge and Michael Shanks couldn't make it, but Colin Cunningham stepped in literally at the last minute and I love the guys from Farscape - Anthony Simcoe [D'Argo], Lani Tupu [Capt. Crais and Pilot], David Franklin [Lt./Capt. Bracca] and Jonathon Hardy [Rygel].

Anthony shared a movie short he'd written and created with the help of Gigi and Jonathon as actors [and Claudia catered the production] and on the second day he brought his guitar and a friend with him and spent his entire panel sharing his music. Lani and Jonathon shared their thoughts on the craft of acting. David did improv acting classes. And Colin? Well ... Colin was, as always, unique and fun to be around.

I fell in love with the intimacy of the BOBW cons and would love to come back to another. Maybe November, if I can swing the funding. Adele has a great collection of guests lined up. :D
