I've finally got my hands on a copy of A Spell for Chameleon the first book in the Xanth series :)

My library couldnt get it in for a while, due to it been needed by other libraries in the county. I have a whole list of books I'm trying to get through the library and not one of them is in my local one

Anyhow I'm rambling. I've heard this series is quite good, though there seems to be a lot in this series.

Anyone else read them?

Chameleon is the first that I read. My username is a character in another book in the series, The man from Mundania.

I love the books and think they are wonderful. full of stupid puns. Although they can contain a more serious note, as in Ogre Ogre and The Isle of View. Its also edifying to read the authors notes afterwards as he takes a lot of the puns from his fans, giving them credit in the notes.

They can be a bit silly, but I love silly so that doesn't bother me in the slightest. I really hope you enjoy them as much as I do (still re-read them constantly):D

I also read these, but it was when I was a teenager. I enjoyed them very much, they were alot of fun to read. I haven't read them since I "grew up" though.:)

I hope I never grow up:p

I have to say, I usually only feel grown up when it's time to pay the bills...;):p

LOL
Tis a feeling we all have to face some time or other, but a bit of a sore point at the moment. I got a summons the other day for unpaid council tax. Rang the council immediatly to find out what in heck was going on. I know its been paid! Turns out hubby had been paying it on last years account!!!!!LOL Money was all there, but apparently the council couldn't merge the two accounts until I phoned.
I Hate Bills!

I wonder, if we got a petetion together, got enough signatures?
We could get them abolished!
(Quick quote so no smilies, but immagine lots of grinning and winking ones)

We should try that!

(and you can put smilies in your quick replies :);):D:p see)

i need to ask, how? I only have the text wraping, bold, italics underline and quotes button?

I've started reading this first book, not got far yet, but can't say i find it that amusing  I take it the book is suppose to be amusing?

Are you reading A Spell for Chameleon? This series was written primarily for the younger set and was begun many eons ago. His humor is different, a little bit dry and sarcastic and a lot of puns. If you don't go for that kind of thing it won't be funny.

I've read some of the Xanth (?) books. They were amusing enough, but didn't really grip me. Anthony seems to have a fairly childish fixation on women's underwear as well. However, homour in fantasy by and large tends to be a dicey thing for me, so it may just be a matter of taste.

I read quite a few of these and I kind of agree with you, though I persisted because I liked a lot of his other stuff. You might want to try 'On a Pale Horse' which is about the man who killed death and then was forced to take his place. I particularly liked the background to why he wrote this - apparently he was on a fitness kick, had a mild stroke and then got to thinking about mortality... the story came from there. I must confess I never got around to reading the rest of the series, but I particularly enjoyed this first one. Must now go and look for them. I think the series was called 'Incantations of Immortality'.

It is actually 'Incarnations of Immortality' but I haven't read them. I may have to see what it's all about. I'm an Anthony fan for several reasons; like most humorists, Anthony takes things that we see every day and looks at them from a different angle. Plus, I like his attitude as an author. If you've read any of his Xanth series and read the 'author's notes' you'll see that he unabashedly prefers his readers over his publishers and the critics.

I have read the full "Incarnations of Immortality" series. As I recall, the first two or three books were pretty good, but then they kind of started going downhill, as far as quality and originality are concerned. There are seven books in the series, the first five treating mythological characters from the Greek tradition, is the best way I can think to characterize them, and then the final two deal with Satan and God, respectively.

I think I'm going to have to go back and read them again, just to refresh my memory of them, as it's been at least 14 years since I've read any of them (I read the last volume when it first came out in 1990). "On a Pale Horse" was the best book in the series, IMO.

Oh, good. At least I read the best one. I also liked 'Mute', and another series which I think started with... was it 'Infinity Cluster'? Not sure. I'm afraid they went to a charity shop when I had my last shelf-thinning.:)
