So, you sort of work for the Federation or Starfleet, but do it for free, and you sort of wear a uniform. You are a sentient being. You don't create anything or cook. You work both on Starships and on planets.
Do you need to be a particular sex or race to do this job, or can anyone do it?

Doesn't everyone who works for the Federation do it for free - that's what i was basing that on. My sort of uniform - i think it's a uniform but we haven't really seen enough people who do this job do be able to determine that, it could just be (very bad) personal preference.
I would assume anyone could do it, but they'd have to be rigorously tested first.

okay summary time:
I work for the Federation, but not really Starfleet - or at least not that they would appreciate. I can work on both ships and planets. I do wear a uniform, although it's probably designed to not look like a uniform.

I don't create anything, I'm not a cook and am not involved in maintaince or cleaning.
I don't appear in TNG or Voyager, at least not that we've seen.
