Which is the Best Fantasy/Sci. Fi. - Series, Trilogy or Single?

I've recently finished reading the Pern series by Anne McAffrey. I thought that was a great series. More recently, I've read the Terry Goodkind series Sword of Truth. Even though it got long-winded at times, I loved the world he created.

Selected the option "other".
Paying homage to the LotR, nonetheless, I would put forth tetralogy by Dan Simmons Hyperion-Endimion and to Stugatskys' trilogy about Maxim Kammerer and River world by P.J. Farmer.
Single book is simply impossible to choose. Asimov, Heilnein, Zelazny, Lem, Strugatsky bros., Carsak, Simak, Anderson, PKD - whoever you chose it would excellent choice!

Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson, definitely. By far the most developed series in fantasy for a long time, perhaps since Tolkien, and Tolkien took 30 years about it, to produce a simpler, less coherent, realistic world. I'm not a great fan of LotR, but I'm not a great opponent to it either.
A song of Ice and Fire comes close, as does China Mieville's New Crobuzon books, but not quite as good as Erikson.

Michael Moorcock's Elric, Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Frank Herbert's Dune, Raymond E Feist/Janny Wurts' Empire series and Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun all are excellent as well, and some of them are generally better written, but not quite as entertaining as the top 3.

I don't know about that type of question. I don't really think theres a trend you can follow to determine whether or not reading novels is more enjoyable than reading trilogies.. or ongoing series. I've read some novels that are really awesome, but then i've read some that really stink. The same is true with trilogies, and ongoing series. Anybody get what i'm saying?

mmm - perhaps i should just stuff it, eh.
I agree, there are to many different books out there some enjoyable, some that should never see the light off day.I enjoy too many to choice one over the other.Although my favourite will always be The Riftwar Saga by Feist.

I'm not sure where this series belong, but it's sure the best books ever. It's the Tomorrow-series by John Marsden. I just love those! I've now read the two first books and I've just started reading the third: The third day, the frost. I hope it is as good as the other ones.

I'm not sure where this series belongs, but it is absolutely the best serie ever. And of course, I'm talking about The Tomorrow-series by John Marsden. Have you read any better book than these? I've now read the first two books and have just begone to read the third: The third day, the frost. I hope it is as good as the other two were!

I voted for other. My favourites include Anne McCaffrey, David Eddings (the early books) and Robert Jordan (again, the early books), amongst others.

Is there anyone here who can help me with deleting post...? As you can see I've made two of almost the same post, and I want to delete one of them, but I don't know how.. It says you can do that when you edit... but where?

Definitely the Empire trilogy, by Janny Wurts and Raymond E Feist.

Melody: I'm not sure what exactly happened to cause the double post, but after 30 minutes, it times out, where you can no longer edit. They don't generally remove or edit a post unless for something that goes against forum rules, and we've all had a few double postsd due to some accident here. So my advice is... don't fret about it. It happens...;)

and who chose Harry Potter

I picked Lord of the Rings simply because it's one that has stayed a favourite over the many years though the others change regularly. There's so many more ... Dune of course and Erikson's books, George RR Martin and now there is China Mieville.

There's also Brian Lumley and Anne MacAffrey's Pern. Raymond E Feist did some good series of books and so did Michael Moorcock.

I just finished reading book 2 in this series, and plan to read the rest. At first our library didn't have them, but luckily I am assisstant to the collection development librarian, and she always orders any books I recommend. We now have the whole series in paperback, and I look forward to reading all of them!
