I love Mal and Wash.

Mal because he appears harah and mean and broken but really he cares a lot for all the people on his boat.

Wash because he is so funny, wears Hawaiian shirts all the time, is married to 'warrior woman' Zoe and is her complete opposite and has SUCH great lines.

'Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!'

'I am a leaf on the wind - watch how I soar'

'Right. Less talking. She's terse - I can be terse. Once in flight school I was laconic.'

'Can we all vote on the murdering people issue?'

' Oh God, oh God, we're all going to die?'

'Nobody but Jayne is sayin' that.'

'Yeah, but... remember the part where it's a trap?'

'Can I make a suggestion that doesn't involve violence, or is this the wrong crowd for that?'

' Start with the part where Jayne gets knocked out by a 90-pound girl 'cause... I don't think that's ever getting old.'

' It's okay, I'm a leaf on the wind!' - ahh was sooo sad when he was killed in serenity......:(

I actually like all the characters.

I'd choose Kaylee and Simon because they're so sympathetic.

I'm sure Shepherd Book was going to turn into a really interesting character with a major story line in season 2, but we'll never know

Mal is easily my favorite but I had trouble deciding between Kaylee and River and Jayne. I love them all for various reasons. I agree Snow Dog that Shepherd Book could have been an interesting character if further developed. Sadly even if there is still a season two now, Shepherd won't be in in, they killed him in Serenity!!!!

It was a tough call, but I went for Mal and Jayne in the end:

* Mal, because he's tough and vulnerable at the same time. Hell, I even named the protagonist of my novel after him (though my hero's full name isn't Malcolm, and his surname isn't Reynolds, either!)

* Jayne, because he's adorably naive and politically incorrect. The scene in "Out of Gas" where Mal recruits him is one of my favourites, closely followed by him "reading" Simon's diary :D

Apart from those two, I really like Wash (playing with dinosaurs!) and Kaylee (fellow geek girl), but of course they're all good characters. If I can ever reach the point of writing half as great dialogue as Jos, I'll die happy!

Kaylee, she's just so adorable and cute, everyone loves kaylee, how could they not? Even Jayne is quite protective over her.

Mal is awesome aswell, tortured but incredibly funny.

I love Simon, I think he's a well written charactar who would have been even more amazing if the series were to continue. And it's the same for most of the charactars, one of the thigns I miss the most is the charactars. Esp. Simon Tam. Also I loved River because of how amzingly quirky she is. What can I say? I'm a sucker for sibling love, too.:p

This is a lot harder that i thought as all of the characters, without exception, have such great back stories. (Were the series to continue, i think that they all would've had some very interesting story arcs.)

I'd have to go with Mal and River. I just think that from what we've seen, these two are the ones that the story is about. (Don't get me wrong, i love all of the other characters, but i can only pick two.)

I just finished watching my DVDs again and I actually ranked them all in order and here's a poll for the top two. :) I love 'em all but I voted for Mal and Jayne like most everybody else. But more people have got to get voting for Zoe - she'd be my third. Mal is kind of the core of the TV series and I just really like the guy who keeps on keeping on and who has every excuse to be bitter and twisted - and is darkened by his experiences - but who keeps on caring about the people he gathers around him. And Jayne is just hilarious, yet is interesting in his own right. His friendship with Book (weights) is interesting and when he's talking to him about a guy like him not usually having that long a life, there's just a great deal of honesty in his deceptiveness. ;) And everything in "Jaynestown" is gold.

Like I say, Zoe's my third because - wow pretty (though Inara's barely prettier) - and because she's Mal's "right hand man" like Jayne is his "left hand man". One of my favorite exchanges is in "The Train Job".

ZOE
Sir, is there some information we might maybe be lacking? As to why there's an entire fedsquad sitting on this train?

MAL
It doesn't concern us.

ZOE
It kind of concerns me...

MAL
I mean they're not protecting the goods. If they were, they wouldn't be letting people past 'em.

ZOE
You don't think it changes the situation a bit?

MAL
I surely do. Makes it more fun.

ZOE
Sir, I think you have a problem with your brain being missing.

MAL
Come on. We stick to the plan, we get the goods and we're back on Serenity before the train even reaches Paradiso only now we do it under the noses of twenty trained Alliance feds and that makes them look all manner of stupid. Hell, this job I would pull for free.

He starts off, she follows.

ZOE
Then can I have your share?

MAL
No.

ZOE
If you die can I have your share?

MAL
Yes.

So my order, where I'm pretty sure about thirds and reasonably okay with the order within those thirds:

Mal
Jayne
Zoe

Kaylee
Inara
Book

River
Wash
Simon

Even Simon's cool, though - he might not be able to much take care of himself but he takes care of River and "ain't no weakling" and does take care of the crew as doc - even if it means doping Jayne and making Wash go all bendy.

I picked Jayne and Mal. They're just great. I need to break out the series and watch them again. I haven't in a while.

It was actually a toss up between Jayne and Zoe. She's just funny, bright, and quirky. Well, they're all great really.

The man they call Jayne!

Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'.
He saw the mudders' lament.
And he saw the Magistrate takin'
every dollar and leavin' five cents.
So he said: "You can't do that to my people."
said "You can't crush them under your heel."
So Jayne strapped on his hat
and in 5 seconds flat
stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal.

Oh, He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne.

Now here is what separates heroes
from common folk like you and I.
The man they call Jayne
he turned 'round his plane
and let that money hit sky.

He dropped it onto our houses
he dropped it into our yards.
The man they called Jayne
he stole away our pain
and headed out for the stars!

(Here we go!)

He robbed from the rich
and he gave to the poor.
Stood up to the man
and he gave him what for.
Our love for him now
ain't hard to explain.
The hero of Canton
the man they call Jayne... Nuff said!

Kaylee, well she's just soooo shiny! :p
