I had heard about this a while ago and it now seems less likely to happen (see link)

Paste this in and add the usual net stuff with the three w's in front of it since I dont have enough posts for a real link.

What do fans think? Would he be a good JTK?

NO, NO, NO

You cannot have another actor play JTK. William Shatner is kirk and will always be kirk. Sorry just can't see it and will never be able to see it.

Not that it will stop me from seeing the movie if it comes out and buying it. I will just talk about the injustice of it and how wrong it is.

I agree with Brian, they need someting new and refreshing. What about a follow up on Whesley and the Traveller with Q? Something deep and profound.

Nope, don;t think it would work. And the permise that Kirk and Spock were at the academy together goes against all the "rules" previously established in the Star Trek Universe. What are they going to do ... go back and re-write "The Cage" so that Spock never served with Pike?

It's nearly as bad as cutting the smoking out of Tom and Jerry :)

I totally disagree.

How much more advanced can the Trek universe possibly get? Ive grown so tired of seeing the holograph chamber and the transporter used to solve 75% of all their problems. Throw in the overused space-time continuum theme and bleah....
The only thing left is for them to actually bring Einstein back from the dead from a strand of hair, develop god-like psionic powers that allow them to teleport at will and phase through time and become beings of pure light.

I want to see more character development, which can occur irregardless of the stardate. Besides which, what would be common technology for a young Kirk & Spock would be forward looking for us.

Im not crazy about a young Kirk & Spock theme, but Im willing to give it a chance and see what they can do with it.

You want real progress? Wrest the franchise from the death-grip the current contributors have had on it for 20 years and plop it into someone elses lap.

I agree ... give it to Rockne S. O'Bannon!!

I understand the reluctance to cast anyone other than Shatner in the role of Kirk, but if this is really about a time when Kirk was a young man then someone else must be chosen to play the role. No amount of makeup and movie magic will allow Shatner to play a 20 year old. In fact, Damon may be too old to play an academy cadet.

We have had someone other than Nimoy play a young Spock after his rebirth on Genesis. And why couldn't Spock and Kirk be at the academy together, graduate and have Spock serve on the Enterprise and Kirk serve on another ship. Kirk didn't come out of the academy and become captain of the Entrerprise on his first assignment. That is what a new movie would be about.

Done by somebody a lot more obsessed than me... I'll admit there might be some scope for overlap in storylines, but according to the timeline, they were not at academy at the same time...

2240 Spock enters Academy 2249 Spock graduates and enters Starfleet 2250 Kirk enters Academy 2252 Spock transfers to Enterprise under captain Pike 2254 Kirk graduates Academy

The problem IMO is really that Star Trek are left looking at their feet - I agree - the franchise desperately needs new blood. I mean, seriously, what is looking into the past of Trek really going to achieve? It's milking the cash cow, but the udders are ulcerated.

Indeed, I just don't see the point of doing prequals beyond milking certain character popularity as its always going to limate creativity. If they want to do another series why not fast forward another few decades as they did in TNG and introduce a new set of races and a different situation for starfleet?

I once hear that Jodi Foster was going to play Boba Fett in the new Star Wars movies so I will take it with a grain of salt.

Yeah, or how about a post-federation future after a economic or social collapse after a golden age. And ships have to navigate through hyperspace minefields so many are afraid to travel and many different earth colonies are cut off from each other, and the solar system is in civil war. And the Vulcans have just disappeard for some unknown reason. Maybe humanity crossed some line and ticked off a Q like race and all these things were done to send humans back to a darker age but a group of scavengers fly around in a Federation/Romulan Hybrid and some human colonies would die out if it weren't for hand outs from the prosperous klingon empire. This is just off the top of my head but I think "bold" ideas can revive star trek so many new "bold" writer's can "boldly" take things in a "bold" new direction.

A shame they are so unwilling to take the risk of pushing any new ideas really as the popularity of the Star Trek name could allow someone to do something really creative that it would otherwise be hard to get backing for. You could argue they had their fingars burnt by DS9 a little but at least that was able to keep enough of a fanbase to go the full 7 seasons unlike Enterprise.

yeah, I remember people not liking DS9 before they even gave it a chance. I specifically remember someone saying "It's too different." Well what's the point in doing the same thing over again. I liked it well enough, and I appreciated trying something different. I liked the premise of Voyager also, even though it was stolen from Red Dwarf.

What was stolen from Red Dwarf? Did it come before Lost in Space or Space:1999?

I remember people not liking Matt Damon as young Kirk before they even gave it a chance. ;)

touche! (don't know how to put the stress over the "e" on a mac yet)

OK, in a space ship trying to get back to earth + a holographic character = stole from Red Dwarf. I would have to watch more of the other shows to give propper stealing credits but if I ever see the camera zoom in on a womans eye then you see a creature and then when you zoom out the lady is that creature, I will know where it was stolen from. In fact I want to steal it. I think it's tough not to steal in Sci-fi.

and yeah, give Matt a chance! Who knows, he might even make me like Kirk.

It could be set in a different timeline - remember Tasha Yar gave birth to a daughter by a Romulan. Anyway, the idea of Star Trek, is to push out into new areas and us Trekkies have been seriously let down by milking the cash cow. I agree to give it to Rockne (Farscape is great) thus getting rid of people who have got stuck in a rut. There was a good series of Star Trek books regarding cross planet contaminition which would be good to see on the small screen. In other words "Make it so!!", then well judge.
