Fingers Crossed for the Hugo Award...

Robert Jordan on George RR Martin:
He sounds like he's trying desperately hard to keep it casual. "Oh yeah, I know him, but its no big deal - hell, I know LOTS of famous people. It's just like my editor keeps telling me "He's not a better writer than you, he's just..different.""

Cherish your illusions, Robert.

(Can ya tell I REALLY don't like his work?)

And....George didn't win :( Robert Charles Wilson won for Spin instead, with Accelerando coming second. A Feast for Crows actually came last. On the plus side, the BwB party was by far the largest and most spectacular at Worldcon.

Best moment of the weekend from the sound of it: Kevin J. Anderson coming out of his reading for Hunters of Dune (total attendance: 8 people) and over 80 members of the BwB filing past for a reading from A Dance with Dragons :D

So am I the only one who's actually glad he didn't win the Hugo this time? Probably, this is a George R. R. Martin forum after all.

I just though that A Feast For Crows was easily the weakest book in the series so far. Perhaps due to really being half of the originally planned book.

I'd much rather he win for a stronger effort, which I'm hoping the next book will be.

You should read all the other recent threads. Most people have been bitching about that for weeks and weeks.

Ah, well I am new here and there are a lot of threads to read. I'm mainly just reading any topics that catch my eye right now.

I'm sad for him, on a personal level, but there's a small part of me thats pleased - if Academy awards and similar went around being given to DESERVING people, that would force me to rethink my "most people are stupid" philosophy - You know, it's the feeling you get when something you like and appreciate, and find rare and stimulating and intellectually satisfying - when it becomes so popular, and even people you loathe and detest are raving about it - you just don't want to share that with them. This is YOUR find, dammnit! Its supposed to be appreciated by the chosen few!
For the rest of the world - there's always Robert Jordan.

I believe (and someone with more geek knowledge can speak more on the subject) it stands for Brotherhood without Banners. From the books you recall thats the name of the bandits (err knights) that run around with Beric Dondarrion righting wrongs and such.

In real life its an informal organization of Martinites (i.e. his fan club)....apparently its where all the cool Martin fans hang out.

Anyone who's read and enjoyed the books is an unofficial and spiritual member of the BwB. There's a website you can sign up on to become an official member but it's not really necessary. And if you think I'm a 'cool' Martin fan, then you'll be disappointed if we ever meet ;)

The main appeal of being a BwB member is the chance of hanging out with fellow fans (and possibly GRRM himself) and enjoying a few beers whilst chatting about the books and indeed other books and anything that comes to mind as well.
