I must admit that I fervently hope that this one is dead, ended,
kaput, and put in the ground. I hate to be so negative, but I really did like the first two films, was about 50-50 on
Jedi... and (with a few scenes excepted) absolutely abominated the last three. As far as I'm concerned, they were in many ways worse than some of thost gawdawful 1950s sf-horror films (I'm not talking the ones that have held up, I'm talking the really awful stuff, like
Atomic Submarine, etc.) in writing -- though of course the special-effects budget was much, much better.
But that's the problem -- and a common one with any sort of fantastic fiilm genre these days -- confusing slick looking special effects with quality. These films were anything but quality, and I had to be blackmailed into going to see the final one, basically. Some nice visuals, but plot holes you could drive an entire planetary system through.
It's a pity. I really would have liked to have liked these. I wasn't expecting the same as the originals, I was expecting some growth, and some maturity from Lucas as a storyteller and filmmaker... something to show that he hadn't just stayed in the same place over the intervening years. Well, he hadn't... but it wasn't a forward movement, either....
