Martin Pwns the world!

Hobb is most definitely Martins equal atm, to say the least.

Tolkien background of his world is amazing, and that is why i like the books for the most part, the world in itself is just mindblowing. But the books in itself are only reasonable goof, little above average wich is not what one expects after hearing of it, indeed to me he is one of the most overrated authors ever. In the movies i found the conversations tedious and too often too melodramatic and oversensitive emotional wise, they too are overrated, and only found so good because of its landscapes and the battles. The fact that i found the movies better then the books bassically says it all.

It is a common gaming expression used precisely because it is a common typo of "Own" and has become somewhat of a symbol. It is used to express, particularly emphatically, that one has "owned" someone or something, that is, to conquer, dominate, or otherwise totally pimp them as your hoe.

"Pwn" is just a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor.
LOL! I think you mean 'Ho', not 'hoe'. A hoe is a gardeing implement. :)
Unless you mean that and were being ironic and I just totally missed it, heh.

I often put my gardening utensils out to work the streets. Hence the phrase to "trowel-slap" someone ;)

Yes, let's go with that.

I thought it was own. Thanks.

You really should take the time to play some MMOs, I marvel at the time it must take to actually pick up that l33t speak stuff (of which pwns is a proud part of now)

While playing City of Heroes one fellow in my group said to a female,

U R so hawt!!!omg teh r0xx0rs!!!!!fordfocus!!!!

....I have coffee stains on my desk now, still not sure what language that is

Im going to defend tolkien real quick, you know to keep the thread on track and all....

Yes its dated now....but I enjoy reading classics, if you think of it in the same vein as classic works it holds up quite well. But alas, its not really contemparary and thus not for everyone anymore.

And as for Martin and messages, while truly so far there hasnt been....too many times an author will pull something out of the hat on the last book...but this feels more like historical fiction at times with all the POVs and politic underscore so I dont think we'll see one.

Agreed with you to all of it.

Okay, that first part is just stupid spelling, but I'm new to it all and the rest escapes me. "OMG" everyone knows, but what is "teh r0xx0rs" and what the hell does "fordfocus" have to do with anything? It's a car!

Anyway, yes, I don't like messages, they make me feel like I'm being preached to. I think one should just read things for the enjoyment of the ride the story takes you on, not to look for hidden meaning or morals or subtle allegory. If you want that, then just go read some philosophical books and stop messing around with novels.

Just for you Happy Tree....a rough translation.

[translation] My dear you are quite attractive. Indeed you are veritably the most attractive woman I have seen. I am quite excited by the prospect of teaming with you and getting to know you better.[/translation]

teh= the
r0xx0rs= you rock
!!!fordfocus!!!= I am a complete moron and the gene pool would be better served without me.

And for the record on MMOs, I play one...City of Heroes....I get to be a superhero and shoot laser beams from my eyes for gosh sakes....fricking LASER BEAM EYES!!!!oneeleventy!!!!! (couldnt help it). I have a wife and child, play sports, accomplish house hold tasks, maintain a social life, and hold down a 60 hour a week job...its all about balance. If you find things addictive, stay away. And stay away from WoW, they would pwn u noob. Yep I have a college degree and this is what I do with it....type like an illiterate. I will now light myself on fire.

As for messages, I admit when I was 12 I completely missed CS Lewis thoughts on a womans place in society and religious....that whole Thomas Covenant series apparent machismo and woman-hating tendencies, and half a dozen other things I cant think of right now....I miss the days when fantasy was fantasy and not allegory.

LOL i have no idea how to respond to that. I actually heard of WOw, not really interested in it. Im sure your correct about my noobiness & would make me like a pretty boy in some high security prison.

The theme of A Song of Ice and Fire is quite plain to me: Power. Some people want power, no matter the cost (Cersei, Mace Tyrell, Euron Greyjoy); some people think they are entitled to power by right no matter their personal feelings (Stannis, Daenerys); others find themselves in power but not wanting it (Jon, Ned); others only want power as an instrument of revenge or justice (Robb, possibly Dany as well). And of course you have Littlefinger, who simply sees power as a game and nothing more.

Oh I play WoW but I have a few real life friends I play with and we just whisper each other and rarely interact with "The Others", that is, the rest of the players.

Back to the thread, yes, one of the things I noticed about C.S. Lewis after going back to it was the immense amount of Christian philosophy that I had only picked up a little of on the first go-round in third grade. Some of my friends were actually surprised when I revealed that the children were killed by a train at the end and that they had been having near-death experiences the whole time.

very succinct on the politics, but you're leaving out a great deal of content(love, emotions, personal growth, "golden age" nostalgia, and shattering the idealizations of youth and summer, and those characters and plotlines that go along with this stuff. GRRM has truly created a masterfully multi-leveled book with enjoyable aspects for everyone.

My coffee must be too strong tonight or something...now Im agreeing with Weirwood...:eek:

But seriously, I dont know if Martin just accidently stumbled onto an incredible diverse multi-threaded story, has a giant corkboard somewhere with 72,143 little note cards on it detailing plot threads and the like, or his writing is amazingly simple and we add untold layers to it, but the fact of the matter is we've picked this story apart from top to bottom and three days from now theres going to be another 7 page thread about some minor detail thats going to grow as we discuss it. Thats an insane amount of detail and complexity, it defies a short description that would encompass a morale, parable or message in a story.

As he narrows the story down near the end, that may change, until then Im really enjoying the ride.
