Very rarely do I give up on a book, though there are instances where I have which mainly comes down to terrible plot twists or when the main characters delve too deep even for my keen into patheticness. I like the main characters to have flaws and weaknesses, but if they have long moments of hiding in the corner mewing I lose interest fast – I suppose I need to have them be understandable from my own viewpoint.
Only one book have I given up on so far this last 4 years – And that very regretfully is Hobbs latest book, the first one was ok, the second is mind blaringly boring to me so far and I’ve got about a 3rd of the way through. Will try and go back and finish it when I have time as it is Hobb, but I’m in no hurry, the story tastes a bit of ashes to me now after the grand excellence of the farseer/liveship/tawny man books, it may pick up a bit later? We shall see.
As for Paks, felt like a D&D novel, read like a D&D novel, expected it to be a D&D like novel. Read them as I had nothing else to hand at the time, found them very average – Some great moments, some terrible poor moments. It did not rock my world, but then this is not my type of writing or world building I enjoy reading about – If there was a central plot it was too hard for me to find, it reminded me very nearly of being a Warhammer (sp?) book flashing from one event to another with little or no back story, It felt and read like one in any event – If you like this style then the forgotten realms or Dragon lance type books are far better, the Death Gate cycle being the best I have read so far.
