Getting away with it
Here’s what I think: last year was so ridiculous, everything seeming to be worse with each passing month everywhere, there was a theory that it was all caused by time travelling historians from the future who travelled back in time to study that calamitous year of 2020. And inevitably they caused it all in the first place, and their subsequent attempts to fix things only made it worse every time they tried.
The solution, and what prevented such worsening increasing further, was to go even further back and make sure that such time travel would not be possible in the first place, thus saving the world.
Ta-daaah.
