Wow another matchup not fit for the first round. Barristan the Bold is another legend, if anyone can take the mountain he can.

hard choice, but brute strength (even if youre 8 foot) comes second to intelligence.

Barristan for me too

The Mountain is truly stupid

xx
Hmm..He's intellectually incredibly basic, but I do believe he has 'battle intelligence'. That is, he is physically gifted with the intelligence of hand to hand tactics and quick thinking in that respect - OK, he relies on his size and armour to protect him but he also showed the ability to see his opponents intentions and counter them. Not as much as Bronn, I agree, but enough to make him more of a stupid walking lunk. Size and muscle is not enough to explain why he's been a Champion and battle leader for, what, atleast 10 years?, faced numerous battles and survived.
Afterall, he and Hodor are nearly the same size, am I wrong? (And I freely admit I could be) But clap Hodor in armour and give him a sword, and could he defeat Barristan?
I'm gonna support Gregor here. Unless someone changes my mind with a cunning argument. Which is possible.

The Funkster has that much correct...the Mountain is incredibly battle savvy. Hes freakishly fast and strong and understands combat on a primal level that belies our understanding

But....Lets not forget that the Red Viper came within an eyelash of beating Gregor. Overconfidence cost him. I dont see a fight between Barristan and Oberon being in doubt...so why wouldnt the more savvy and more skilled Barristan the Bold win out against the Mountain

Gregor is certainly a brute and would never make a good politician, but I'm not sure where this "dumb" idea comes in. He definitely isn't mentally handicapped when it comes to combat, the guy is a walking tank with a sword that he knows how to use.

True, true. I guess the important issue is whether Gregor is facing Barristan as he was before he left on Roberts command (when he did seem brash and foolish) or whether this is a post-resurrection Barristan. Because after his resurection, Selmy seemed to be losing strength (and an eye), whilst gaining humility and cunning. Ideally, I guess it would be post-resurrection Barristan minus his serious wounds, with his burning sword.
The 2nd major obstacle is Gregors armour - unless the burning sword can melt through it, Barristan would have to get him down and thrust through the face plate, IMO, avoiding the Mountains crushing arms. The Vipers spear had the advantage of a very slender blade which Barristan won't have.
Damn, I wish we could see this for real! Maybe we could persuade GRRM to write us some hypothetical battle scenes in his spare time.

What the hell are you talking about? Barristan never died and was not resurrected and he never had a flaming sword.

Doh! I confused Barristan with Beric in that last post.Ye gods, I feel stupid. No more late night posting for me.
If there's a mod out there reading this, could you delete my last post?

Gregor has been a champion only because he's a rabid dog. Tywin himself said that he only kept Gregor around because it was useful to have someone like that, who literally had no sense of right and wrong. Gregor gives a new meaning to the word "brutal." And that's why he's a good fighter. Pain and anger only stir him up more. He won't quit. As far as having the intelligence to read his opponent, well, I'm not so sure about that. Loras almost beat him purely by riding a mare in heat.
And if you compare Gregor's length of service to Barristan's, it's nothing. As Arstan he is still fast and wily enough to beat pretty much anyone, and he's nowhere near his prime.

Again, I agree with Funky C. Gregor possesses (that word always me think of Gollum) an instinct for battle that no one else does. Killing is the only thing he's good at... actually, he's good a rape, but that's beside the point. Killing for Gregor is his raison d'etre.

I picture this fight as Captain America versus the Hulk. If Gregor's instincts keep him alive for the first few minutes of the battle (I agree that Barristan's superior intelligence and mobility are almost unbeatable), then I believe that Gregor's strength can start to really wear down Barristan. If Barristan cannot finish him fairly quickly, then sooner or later Gregor will catch him with a massive blow.

Gregor is Tony Mandarich nothing more

Overgrown and aggressive, But ill take skills over brute strength any day, and by skills im not talking Napolean Dynamite.

My analogy for this battle : Chuck Lee vs Andre the Giant

Chuck Lee? Who the heck is that? The crazy illegitimate offspring of Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris? In which case I would pick his conjoined twin brother Bruce Norris.....he;s the tougher of the two.

We are talking about them in their prime right. If so it is Barristan. I mean he was considered the best swordsmen of the world. And he has proven himself countless times, both in valour as wit
