Hmm..He's intellectually incredibly basic, but I do believe he has 'battle intelligence'. That is, he is physically gifted with the intelligence of hand to hand tactics and quick thinking in that respect - OK, he relies on his size and armour to protect him but he also showed the ability to see his opponents intentions and counter them. Not as much as Bronn, I agree, but enough to make him more of a stupid walking lunk. Size and muscle is not enough to explain why he's been a Champion and battle leader for, what, atleast 10 years?, faced numerous battles and survived.Adasunshine said:Barristan for me too
The Mountain is truly stupid

True, true. I guess the important issue is whether Gregor is facing Barristan as he was before he left on Roberts command (when he did seem brash and foolish) or whether this is a post-resurrection Barristan. Because after his resurection, Selmy seemed to be losing strength (and an eye), whilst gaining humility and cunning. Ideally, I guess it would be post-resurrection Barristan minus his serious wounds, with his burning sword.Aegon the Unworthy said:The Funkster has that much correct...the Mountain is incredibly battle savvy. Hes freakishly fast and strong and understands combat on a primal level that belies our understanding
But....Lets not forget that the Red Viper came within an eyelash of beating Gregor. Overconfidence cost him. I dont see a fight between Barristan and Oberon being in doubt...so why wouldnt the more savvy and more skilled Barristan the Bold win out against the Mountain
Doh! I confused Barristan with Beric in that last post.Ye gods, I feel stupid. No more late night posting for me.the smiling weirwood said:What the hell are you talking about? Barristan never died and was not resurrected and he never had a flaming sword.
Gregor has been a champion only because he's a rabid dog. Tywin himself said that he only kept Gregor around because it was useful to have someone like that, who literally had no sense of right and wrong. Gregor gives a new meaning to the word "brutal." And that's why he's a good fighter. Pain and anger only stir him up more. He won't quit. As far as having the intelligence to read his opponent, well, I'm not so sure about that. Loras almost beat him purely by riding a mare in heat.Funky Cthulu said:Size and muscle is not enough to explain why he's been a Champion and battle leader for, what, atleast 10 years?, faced numerous battles and survived.
Afterall, he and Hodor are nearly the same size, am I wrong? (And I freely admit I could be) But clap Hodor in armour and give him a sword, and could he defeat Barristan?
