We are talking about them in their prime right. If so it is Barristan. I mean he was considered the best swordsmen of the world. And he has proven himself countless times, both in valour as wit
Actually, I suspect for some competitors who have aged, they would be better off in some ways fighting at that age, depending on their opponent. Whilst their bodies have aged, they have learnt more than they knew when they were at their physical peak. And since no one has the strength or endurance to rival the Mountain, they have to out wit him - an ability gained through life experience. Although it makes for great speculation, its almost cheating (if this had any actual rules) to give the competitors young strong bodies and give them credit for all the experience they gained in a lifetime.

I always took the term "in their prime" not to mean function of physical stature but when someone is at their peak period....for Barristan that might be later in life, but I doubt it considering he was winning tourneys against grown men before he was old enough to shave. Didnt he say he won his first tourney at the age of 13

And another thing, the mountain would crush him in an instant? Im confused, the Red Viper nearly beat the guy and yet the premiere living knight wouldnt last more than an eyeblink. I get the Mountains size strength speed and intinctual combat (as pointed out during the Red Viper duel) but dont you think Barristan would at least do just as well?

Sometimes people confuse me....this is one of those times.

The guy doensnt seem stupid and from his record he more then knew all the whips of the fighting on an early age, even so lets take 34 years old, at that age he still has most of his speed, his strenght and stamina are undeterred and he probably has all the cunning he needs in swordfighting.

I mean the term best swordsman in the world is not so easily gotten especially when you consider that Arthur Dayne and the likes still probably lived at the time

Tony Mandrich? cold. rofl

In an instant is an astute comment, especially within the idea of the battle he had with the Viper. He got a hold of the Viper for an instant, and killed him.

I'm pro Gregor.

Boaz, with all due respect Tommen could spin Mr Tony

Mutters (Barry Sanders, Troy Aikmen) but without that incompetance there would be no Favre

Ill rephrase that Robert Arryn could spin Tony

as i continue to think... albeit poorly ... heres the competition i see as the most relevant regarding that bufoon....

Mounted and lanced Loras vs Hodor in a stockade

Hopefully i answered your question, and if not

I'd sooner have Bran or Aegon on my line :)

I'll be whooping that sorry Gregor all round the place!!

Lol!

Seriously though, I'm all for Barristan. He still has the reactions of a honed fighter, and I believe this is the most important thing to defeat Gregor. Nip round him fast, get him tired, then exploit his mistakes. Not quite as quick as Bronn Vs Vardis, but a similar style nonetheless.

I cant wait to see if there ends up a fight between Strong Belwas and Gregor!!

Barristan to victory!!!

Just wanted to paste a quote from the Wikipedi entry of the War of the Ninepenny Kings

"Barristan Selmy, who killed Maelys the Monstrous in single combat and ended the Blackfyre line."

I dont know who Maelys is....but he sounds big and scary....and while he may not be the mountain the rides, he's something...so obviously our good Ser Barristan is more than capable at defeating monstrous opponents.

Hey Wiggum, how about a consolation round for the loosers. No holds barred, cage match, WWE Royal Rumble type of thing. Last one standing after the brawl, takes on the tournament winner.

An average fighter can kill someone in an instant if you measure from the fatal blow to the death. "Making short work" of someone means defeating them in a quick fight (that did not happen). The Mountain struggled through a long fight and made the fatal blow after The Viper thought he was out and got careless. It could have gone either way (though it worked out for the best in the end).:D
