This is Gwen Cooper's first day working for Torchwood.
*Spoiler Alert*
Gwen joins the team; Cardiff's nightlife is at the mercy of a
sexually driven alien, who leaves behind a trail of gruesome deaths.

Torchwood must track down the creature's new host, dealing with the ideas it represents, and confronting a violent new form of love in the 21st
century.
*end spoiler*

I thought this was a stronger episode than the first, by actually having a plot, but there needs to be more in each as we go on. A bit of a cliched start with how the alien was released, but the rest got better. And what a way to die...

^_^ lmao!

I really liked this episode, thought it was much better than the first, which was also great! I agree with the alien release but the plot was a good one and an interesting one and I enjoyed it immensley.

xx

Okay now that is just disgusting. I don't think we will be watching this here when and if it airs in America.

Why not?

The "Outer Limits" did the exact same episode in the 90's with Alyssa Milano and of course there was "Species" the movie which had a similar plot.

No nipples or anything were shown although there was a couple of good one liners "He came and he went" and the Gwen made some knob joke about puttin gout an APB.

I thought this was a weaker episode than the pilot as it was a complete rip off of other shows.

The interplay with Capt Jack and Gwen is ok, but the others are pretty anonymous.

Next weeks looks ok from the trailer. *fingers crossed*

I pretty much agree with you Lucien in that it was a bit of a rip-off and not a very original plot.

I remember feeling outraged when I read the synopsis in the TV mag. Why oh why do they have to put sexual content in Sci-fi stuff just because they want it to be more "adult"? That really gave me the hump with the Outer Limits actually.

But, in this case, it was fine. Sexual references were there but there was nothing out of order - hats off to them for that.

Still have high hopes for the next episodes.

i hope it grows, it still seemed a bit 'dr who'ish to me. with sequels, i prefer them when they shake off the parent program and grow on their own. alos watched the torchwood declassified (my son has a cold, i was up laaaaaaaaattttttteeeeeeeeeee), which included lots of back slapping, i always wish i could make those writers, patting their backs at their originality, read this sort of thread in which it becomes patently obvious that they are walking well worn paths.

wohohoho, posting same time:D, but yeah, will we next have some xena'ish character popping by in tight leather, cause of course, sci-fi / fantasy has to have scantily clad females as well!

We all sat and watched to 2 eps. last night and we will definatly be watching it again...the menfolk in the house...husband and son also thought...wow what a way to go...typical

Captain Jack is sooo cool:cool:

I know Outer Limits did a similiar thing but it still is beyond what I call good entertainment, even for scifi. Nothing personal, but that is just too far out for my tastes. I knew Torchwood would be darker and have more adult themes, but that one episode is not going to be typical of the series, I hope, or I definitely will not be investing my time in it.
I am just not that interested in overt sexual themes in the things I watch.

Definitely not one to watch with the parents

however as an adult it's nice to watch sci fi that doesn't have to cater for the younger viewer. I found it quite refreshing.

actually I would say its not one to watch with the children. Adults is another matter. But anyways I didnt mean any offense If I caused any....I could have worded it differently....

I thought it was weaker than the first episode. They should have explored Gwen's interaction with her police partner, and her boyfriend more, and her guilt at being responsible for the aliens release.

I wouldn't watch it with my son if he were younger but he's a grown up now. It's nice to have a scifi that does cater for the adults, although it's a shame it always comes back to sex.

I'll agree that 'adult' doesn't necessarily have to equate to 'sex'. I didn't particularly mind the sex, but it felt almost farcical at times, and I think I'd prefer for Torchwood to stay more serious.

I'll also agree that this episode was weaker than the opener. They make a big deal of bringing Gwen in because she can relate to people and be the 'human' part of the unit, yet she becomes so obsessed with helping this one girl that she detaches herself from everybody else in her life.

I did like the severed hand, though, and particularly Jack's reactions to it. :D

I also thought that this episode was weaker than the first. Very little character development.

I do quite like Torchwood though, partly because it's set in Cardiff (since that is where I live!). The club scene where she met the guy is a club called Creation, and I've been there. Loved seeing that.

However I don't understand what Jack is doing in our time, and in Cardiff, and in charge of Torchwood, since Torchwood is against the Doctor and Jack is supposed to be his ally.

At the risk of sounding like a complete Dr. Who n00b, what's the thing with the hand?!

The hand is from the Doctor.

In the Xmas special last year when the giant spaceship was above London the Doctor had a sword fight with an alien who cut his hand off.

The Doctors hand regenerated, but the cut off one fell down to London.

The hand in the Jar is a Timelord's hand.

As to what Capt Jack is using it for I'll leave that to your imagination :)
