The "Wheel of Time" series, I bought one of these books today which I hpðe is the first one. It's a paperback but on the book it says, "A Wheel of Time Novel: New Spring". Is that the first book or what ?

Also, is it worth going through the whole series ?

And how many books are there ?

New Spring is the prequel to the series and a good place to start. I'm not sure how many books he has now. I know I have ten of them but I also know there are more. When he'll stop... we can only hope it'll be soon. Good luck reading it. :)

Thank you, so what's the name of the next book after the prequel one ?

I'm a newcomer to the world of the Wheel of Time myself, having just finished reading the first book. It's good to see that I'm not the only one here who hasn't read all of it yet! Seems like I've got a long journey ahead of me, with so many sequels to read and all, but I've been told that it's worth it.

personally i don't think it's worth bothering with any of them. they start off well but go down hill fast.

I have read all of his books, plus the prequel, and have enjoyed every one of them. I do hope you will also...

I am now patiently waiting for his next publication. :)

Out of curiosity, exactly how many books are still to come? I know about the books up to Knife of Dreams and the prequel New Spring, but what then?

I've only read the prequel and am waiting for the series to end... I can't stand starting an unfinished series. I have done that twice and I have found that in both cases I have had to go back and reread the first books just so I'm up to speed for the next one that is about to come out. I also hate waiting to know how it'll all end. :(

What the market will bear?:p

I think it's 12 in total, not including the prequel. I gave up after 6. Pages and pages of what they're wearing, constantly tugging hair braids and nothing happening for chapter on end, wore me down to apathy.

The series could have rivaled LOTR but Jordan's outrageous use of padding has ruined it.

That's just my personal opinion and I apologise to those people that love it if I've caused any offence, but newcomers to the series should be made aware of what they're about to get into.

Tugging hair braids and nothing happening for chapters on end? It sounds like it'd make a good soap opera. Twelve is a lot of books to read, but hopefully, just maybe, the last one will be the best yet. Mind you, if that's the case, then I'll HAVE to read the others, just to know what's been going on.

I got half way through book 4 before giving up. Starts well, interesting ideas and a unique way of describing sword fights I really enjoyed. By book 4 he was taking a huge amount of pages to tell what seems like very little story, new plot threads and characters sprouting in all directions. Some characters had just a few pages of coverage in 2 chapters in an entire book. Glad I stopped, book 11 last time I looked. In the end I feel it is just a synical attempt to extract cash from those who have to have completion of the story. It just goes on and on and on and on and ...

I read this series up until and including book 5. The story seemed to deteriorate almost from the beginning, but it felt OK until somewhere around book 3, when Faile was introduced. Book 4 was pretty bad, but I read book 5 just to see if there was any chance it'd get better. It didn't.

Books 1-5 have some of the best fantasy writing I've ever read. In fact, Eye of the World, is and will always be in my top 5 books.
After that, it's like another author took over the series. The pace and feel changes completely.

Don't read the prequal first. It will completly ruin the first book. I recomend starting at the first book, The Eye of the World (Sometimes sold in a two part under From the Two Rivers, and To the Blight) Some argue his series goes downhill and whatnot, but compared to the bulk of the fantasy genre, he is uncomparable in quality and enjoyment. And for whoever asked, there is one more, A Memory of Light, left to be published.

Thanks for the advice about not reading the prequel first. From what I've heard, opinion seems to be mixed on whether I should finish reading the series or not. However, it seems that I've been drawn into the world of WoT, and I'd like to see how it finishes, at least. If 'A memory of Light' is the last book, then I suppose I won't have long to wait.
