Hello everyone. While rereading AFFC something caught my eye. On pg 247 of the hardback the small council is discussing how the war is all but won. Cersei states,"Roose Bolton should have no trouble winning them (the Northern lords) to our cause. A few have already joined up with his ******* son to help clear the wretched ironmen from Moat Cailin and clear the way for Lord Bolton to return. Umber, Riswell... I forget the other names." So here is the afore mentioned crackpot theory. Bolton bastards host clears the ironborn from Moat Cailin from the north. No prob b/c Victarian left with most of his power to go to the kingsmoot. (sp) They garrison the three towers, but the Umbers and Riswells pull the double cross, I was thinking killing them is their sleep. Not the most honorable way to do business but after the Red Wedding I find it strangly appropriate. The Umbers the Riswells and possible some help from the people of Greywater, foftify Moat Cailin and wait for Lord Bolton to come up the cause way. Even if he knows they are there, he still has to come with his foot b/c there isn't any food in the riverlands. So he has to attack from the south. This of course is the one place that has been mentioned at least twice is impossible to attack from.... you guessed it! The south. Results ******* of Bolton dead (check), Lord Bolton after the attack dead (check). Now for those pesky ironborn. Of course GRRM has a way of crushing my dreams. Feel free to destroy my theory so I don't have to wait for ADWD.

OK ill admidt i shouldnt post at the moment, however i am so in the camp that westeros is saved in the north (thus insuring the fall of the lannisters).

Stannis' only shrewd move and the fall of Cersei X2 with the advent of the sparrows.

Westeros is primed to fall , but thank jon and dany

Hi Mountain (great nick!)
That is certainly plausible, and I would love to see the Boltons undergo the same treatment they dish out - and that could mean that Theon could fall into the Umbers (and co) hands. But I don't feel sorry for him.
However, the main argument against such a double cross is that the remaining northmen would have to deal with the fury and attack of the Lannisters and allies once again, this time without their rallying leader. Quite a chance to take, but if they wait until winter has set in, and they are isolated from the KL group...could just work. I hope they do it, personally.

One word: LEADER???????????

Who will plan all that? Umbers? Riswells? They where loyal to Rob Stark, but he is death, and army need a leader. Give me name and theory will be great!

Oh, Aegon, that's good. And Mountain, very good as well.

Personally, I would like to see some dragon action in the North but I'll accept this very sound theory. You should email it to GRRM and see what kind of reaction you get. ;) His email address is: georr@aol.com

I just can't see the Umbers meekly bending the knee to the people that helped kill the Small Jon. Besides (and I could be wrong about this) I was under the impression that Umbers and Boltons didn't really get along all that well anyway. There just seems to be a lot of people with questionable loyalty in that region, Umbers, Riswells, Reeds, Kings men, Blackfish, the group that Robb sent to the Reeds, and the Tully garrison. Seems like with that many people grouped in a relatively small area something has to be about to happen. Is there anyone left of the group that was decimated at Duskendale? If they could pull this off and get the Boltons in the causeway with a group of loyal northmen trailing them from the south. We would have the hammer and anvil situation. I love theories

OK.Brynden Tully, I agree he is mostlikely Rob's heir but we neeed a man(or a woman) on the north making plans and leading the throops. His name I seek! Don’t say H. Reed, he didn’t help Rob and he was “never” seen after Robert’s War. Why? Don’t know? Something happened. What??? Don’t know???

I know this may seem odd, but perhaps a post coldhands Bran?

The only problem with the "Umber" theory was that a) I beleive that Big Umber was still a prisoner for ransome, thus compelling the other Umbers to obey and b) wasn't the guy in charge of the Umber territories called "Whoresbane", this implying that he might be just another Bolton?

How about Galbart Glover or Mage Mormont as the potiential leaders? They both left before the Red Wedding, They know who Robb's heir is, and if Rickon is at Greywater Watch, they know all is not lost. Besides Deepwood Motte is invested with ironborn, would Glover trust Bolton to just give him back his castle? When I think of trustworthy Bolton just doesn't come to mind.
Somebloke: I don't know why he is called Whoresbane, but that is a great nickname, unless that is his given name which would be even better.
And finally, I really thought Raven (who I think is secretly GRRM) would have crushed this goofball theory which was born of too little sleep and too much caffine, by now. Perhaps I am not as crazy as I assumed I was.

Can I direct you to the thread entitled Who is Robbs heir?. Im sure theres others out there but this is the only one that I know about.

Once you get past the "What does it matter, the north is in ruins" posts and the "does Brans block and tackle still work" (and speculation on Bran is still kinda interesting in a Jerry Springer sorta way) posts it makes for interesting read. Personally I feel that we still dont know who Robb appointed as heir in the north at that meeting shortly before the Red Wedding I kinda felt the Blackfish was named Regent and as such would be leading the insurgency after the Bolton regime came to power.

Ya know, as Roose Bolton how many other people would you be less enthused to find out was leading the underground movement against you? I can not think of one person that is as implacable, capable and respected as Brynden Tully in the North.

How Post Coldhands Bran? He is behind The Wall in given time!

Galbart Glover and Maeg Mormont are more possible leaders of North.Blackfish was probable named Regent but there is no communication with him.

What about H. Reed? Is there a threat about H.Reed?

...and the "does Brans block and tackle still work" ...posts....

Classic, I do not believe that any one topic sums up the need for the next book to arrive more so than the one discussing Bran's crippled johnson!

MTR - interesting theory. I believe something along those lines will happen, simply to expediate the conflicts in the series to the evential end. If your theory holds true the I have to agree with others in that the only two characters that would seemingly be capable enough to lead would be The Blackfish (longshot even if he was named regent) or Howland Reed (and when saw him last when???).

However unlikely, it would be an interesting situation for Bran's public emergence with Coldhands, thus pulling northern supporters to reunite beneath a Stark Banner once again. I just can't help getting idea of some group discussing who is the rightful heir or leader and Bran comes in riding on a direwolf.

9 1/2 mionths until August 2007!

You just said we couldn't talk about him, now you bring him up. That's not fair! (smiley that I am not allowed to use yet)

Interesting theory. However, my guess is that it will be Theon who killes Ramsay. Ramsay betrayed him at the end of ACoK, took him to the Dreadfort and has been burning parts off of him since then. When/if Theon escapes (since reading about him being flayed alive for long stretches of ADWD would be somewhat tedious), I think Ramsay is in trouble.

GRRM has confirmed that there will be an Asha POV in ADWD.

I seem to remember that, in your infinite wisdom Werthead, you suggested that she will be the one to break him out of prison with a promise that she will support him if he supports her???

H. Reed!!! H.Reed!!! H.Reed!!! I just can't stop. Somebody give me a theory fast! H.Reed!!! H.Reed!!! ….

I dont remember the current timeline well enough to say whether or not Roose Bolton has passed Moat Cailin at the end of the book.

Heres the thing though, the North are a queer people....and I think given time Roose will get his head handed to him regardless of what gets done. Blackfish or Bogfish it really doesnt matter who's in charge.

With that said, I dont think Reed would make any sort of leader in the insurgency. The bogmen are not respected by the populace at large, and while they do have a wonderful base of operations to work from (think Sherwood Forest...or Leslie Neilsen as the "Swamp Fox" oh how I love the old Disney Shows....) he wont work as a commander. He would work as a wonderful lieutenant though. Using his wisdom and seemingly mystic knowledge to aid someone else would be his ideal role.

Thats why I cast my vote for Brynden Tully. Oh wait, my chad is hanging....
