I have to disagree about The White Plague. It was the first Herbert I read after Dune and I found it very compelling. I've read it many times and it also helped me decide to read Biochemistry at uni.

I recently read The Santaroga Barrier. I enjoyed the premise and found it engaging, though the characters weren't as well developed as his characters in Dune. Still a good read.
