Old school anime

What's the best piece of old school anime you've seen? For me, it would have to be Masamune Shirow's Dominion Tank Police. There are other titles of course - the original Bubblegum Crisis, Project A-ko or Legend of the Four Kings - but Dominion stands out for me largely because it was one of the first pieces of anime that I ever bought.
 
Probably Gunbuster (if thats classed as old school) Ok, so it has a bit of a lame ending but overall its a stunning piece of anime.
 
I'm not sure if this is old school, but I really enjoyed Fushigi Yuugi despite its poor quality.
 
Ninja Scrolls was probably one of the first anime movies (as opposed to series) I ever saw but it's been way to long to say if it's as good as I think I remember it :rolleyes: .

Was a big fan of Robotech as a kid and have been thinking about getting Chôjikû yôsai Macross (Super Dimension Fortress Macross) which provided the core animation, after being mixed with two other series and creating a new storyline.

Has anyone seen this? Is there a decent english dubbed version or should I go for the original with subtitles?

I've already posted about Grave of the Fireflys, one of the best war movies in it's own right bar none.

I haven't seen the Macross series, but I have seen one of the films: Macross Plus. It was based on the series, but it was made 10 years after, keeping all of the show's elements. I really enjoyed it, and as always, I'd say to get the subbed version - if possible. I saw it on VHS a while back so that was probably dubbed, but someone is bound to have released it on dvd by now.

I don't think I've seen a tone of old school anime, but . .

How old school is Lupin the 3rd? That was pretty good. The art was more on the budget side, but the story was exciting and the dub that aired on CN was funny. You could tell it had been updated.


Though I'm not a die hard fan Neon Genesis Evangelion is still a classic . . though I think it's probably a little past old school . . not sure on your definition exactly.

I haven't seen it, but I bet Captain Harlock fit's in your definition of old school. I think I'd like to see that one some day.

There is some old school French Anime that I liked even before I knew what anime was: Belle and Sebastian and The Mysterious Cities of Gold . . that aired on Nickelodeon when I was still in grade school.

Probably the worst sudo-old school anime I've seen is Akira. I know some people love it, but it was hard to follow and very long. The plot seemed almost ascent too.
 
I remember Mysterious Cities of Gold. I loved that show - in fact, I think it was the very first piece of anime I watched.
I wouldn't mind watching Captain Harlock, either. That was late 80's, wasn't it, so I'd definitely class that as old school. By the way, I think I'd define 'old school' as anything that was made before 1995 - or anything that was first released on video, rather than dvd.:)

those are the ones I remember watching it when I was little..

I loved Urusei Yatsura. It had one of the most colourful cast of wacky characters ever seen before in early anime. After all, where else could you find the Princess of the Oni living with a dysfunctional human family, who counts the Japanese goddess Benten and the snow princess Oyuki as her best girlfriends?
I've heard of Saint Seiya, largely from the manga and from my trusty anime film guidebook, but I've never seen it, and I haven't seen the others, either. Still, I can look them up now and see what I've missed. It's nice to look back at the old stuff every now and again - in my humble opinion...:)
 
oh oh oh I love Saint Seiya since I was 3!!! and new episodes are coming out every year nowadays...any SS fans here? It's such a big hit in France and Spain, but I'm not sure in Britain...and for some reason no one watches it in North America...but in Asia is also really big..
 
I'm not sure what is meant by 'old skool' animé but I used to watch Marine Boy on BBC TV in the 1970's.

Marine Boy was known as Kaitei Shonen Marien (Marine The Sea Bottom Boy) in Japan. It was produced in 1966-1967 in Japan by Minoru Adachi through K Fujita Associates Inc and released by Japan Tele Cartoons and Seven Arts Television world wide.
 
By old school, all I meant was shows you used to watch when you were young - so it could be anything. For me, it was anything made before 1995, but it varies from person to person.
