Old school anime

I remember Mysterious Cities of Gold. I loved that show - in fact, I think it was the very first piece of anime I watched.
I wouldn't mind watching Captain Harlock, either. That was late 80's, wasn't it, so I'd definitely class that as old school. By the way, I think I'd define 'old school' as anything that was made before 1995 - or anything that was first released on video, rather than dvd.:)

I loved Mysterious Cities of Gold too. I even had a dream about it when I was a kid I think I was hanging out with Esteban or something.

I like your definition of Old school. It definitely predates the great anime licensing craze. (Not that I dislike that I'm great full for it's increased popularity.)

For me, the classic anime are:
1. Space Battleship Yamato / Uchuu Senkan Yamato. A space opera. There was no mecha in this anime, only the space battleship and space fighters like Battlestar Galactica.
2. Cyborg 009. The original, not the remake.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (I know, I know, but I really loved it), Cities of Gold, The Last Unicorn, Project A-ko, Fushigi Yuugi, Revolutionary Girl Utena (series and OVA), and My Neighbour Totoro. Oooh, and a hauntingly beautiful classic Tenshi no Tamago.

I think anime with poignant/tender themes were the most memorable for me.

Ninja Scroll - great movie
Macross original tv series (1982)
Vampire Hunter D (1985)

These series, movies i have watched in the last ten years but they are the best old school anime i have seen. Made in the 80's and early 90's in Ninja Scroll's case.

Captain Tsubasa (1983-1986)- i saw the anime series in yemen in 92 as a 9 year old. The only tv series i remember from my childhood.

Momoka, Project A-ko was one of the first animes I saw, as well as one of the most wacky. That really takes me back to the old days.:)

And Connavar, I haven't seen the original Macross series, although I've seen Macross Plus. And yes, Ninja Scroll was great.:)

Legend of Galactic Heroes - arguably the best space opera anime. Tons of characters and one of the most epic storylines in anime I've seen.

Oh Yes, Carmine Boy! I agree and support your opinion. The space battle scenes of LOGH are awesome!:D

It's my bad luck that I can only get the first 50 episodes.:p And I watched LOGH on this century, so I don't consider this anime as my old school anime.

Was a big fan of Robotech as a kid and have been thinking about getting Chôjikû yôsai Macross (Super Dimension Fortress Macross) which provided the core animation, after being mixed with two other series and creating a new storyline.

Has anyone seen this? Is there a decent english dubbed version or should I go for the original with subtitles?

I've seen SDF Macross, but only in sub, and it wasn't very different from The Macross Saga of Robotech - at least not the first half. The longer you watch, though, the more differences you'll find. I've heard the differences are more apparent in the other two series. To be honest, I like the music in Robotech better, and I still prefer ADV/Harmony Gold's adaptation over the orginal (which probably makes me an oddball :D ).

I tried to watch SDF Southern Cross, but lost interest quickly. Maybe I'll try again later, but again I prefer Robotech. The main thing of note that I did find interesting was that it does not take place on Earth.

Since I watched them on Veoh TV, which has undependable quality, I wouldn't recommend it unless you can't find another source.

Well, there's my 2c... ;)

Oh wait: Hikari-sa, Thunder Cats is really anime?

Not in the sense of all the others mention, but it is a staple I would say. Its is a very well done cartoon that was I feel a head of its itself when coming up against all the fuuff that was out back around that time. I remeber the first cartoon I can actually remeber watching was dbz when it came out in the 80 in the US on pbs i think it was.

Sorry, I'm having a little trouble interpreting your post (silly me). But no ... no falcons. There were two parts (I suppose they were seasons?), and I recall liking the second more (Earth's Voltron) - although the lions were cool, too. I want to watch it all again but it seems I may have to buy it to do that, since I can't find it streaming online anywhere.

Or were you asking "what was the one with falcons?" If so, I do remember watching something like that when I was a kid, but my memories of it are very vague.

Macross, or Robotech, is my all time oldschool fav. Giant robots, aliens, space battles, love triangle, this show had it all. I admit it was tought to pick one since so many of the older, god i fell old saying that, ones were great. Dominion Tank Polie, Ghost in the Shell, Ranma 1/2, etc...
P.S. Akira was horrid! It was only ever popular because it was one of the first mainstream releases in Anime.

Some of these, not perhaps the best. But they are certainly the most memorable:

Akira
Doomed Megalopolis
Cyber City Oedo 808
Fist of The North Star

(fav) old school anime for me:
Ninja Scroll - great fighting scenes

Gunbuster - this anime put more serious laws of physics in the story (the relativity in traveling at light speed) than most anime.
