Stephen King - Best Book??

I'll admit that the ending to IT was one of my biggest, "WTF?" moments in all of King's novels.

If memory serves me correctly, after all that buildup, which was substantial, it ends up being Turtle Power vs Spider Power?

If I knew I'd live until I was 200 and could read 2000 words a minute, I'd probably read most if not all Stephen King's work. That not being the case, I've just read a few short stories and the short novel The Mist. I've not been bitten by the King Bug yet but if and when I am I'm sure it'll make me very sick (but in a nice way).

In my eyes, His best books would be.

The Shining
The Stand

Best Short Story

Survivor Type

Best Novella's

The Body
Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption

I'm just twenty-two, and have probably been reading King's books for about a decade now -- and in that time I've unfortunately had to do other things than just read -- but I've read thirty-five of the list of forty-five or so major novels that are listed at the beginning of most of King's books. And that's with a fair few rereads as well. The man is prolific, there's no doubt about that, and I won't confess that I'd read anywhere near enough of his short stories as I would like...but it's not an impossible task to read most of his stuff. Hell, the guy is stupidly popular, any library is going to have a hefty chunk of his stuff on its shelves. It's where I started all them there years ago.

My favorite SK book is 'Salem's Lot. Love it and the way it makes me want to believe in vampires. ;) I'm reading it now, and writing about it on my blog.

The Stand has totally captivated me since it's original printing which I read at a rather young age. I've reread it over and over through the years and was always sad at the end that it had to be over and I would once again have to leave a very real world (to me) of friends that I would miss. When the unabridged version was published I was only to happy too take it up and revisit my old friends, and to meet so many new friends. Still, I always find myself somewhat melancholy when I come to the end that I must leave that world behind. Perhaps it is time to read it again?

IT will always stand out as one of the few books that have ever frightened me. I read it when it first came out and had quite a few feverishly sleepless nights plagued by thoughts of things that go bump in the night. Things adorned in silver skins with orange pom-poms. Like The Stand, I have read this book over and over and will most likely continue this behavior until I find the clearing at the end of the path.

I am of course partial to the Stand, as I think there is nothing better, but then some of his novelettes come pretty darn close. Probably my favorite that I don't think gets mentioned near enough is The Breathing Method. Might good, mighty good.

Aside from the obvious ones like The Stand and It, my faves would have to be Bag of Bones, The Dead Zone and one of his less mentioned ones, Firestarter.

The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile; in spite those are not about terror, for me both are superb...

As a whole my favorite is the DT series, even though it suffered somewhat from middle book syndrome.

My single book favorite has to be The Stand. Tansy, don't know if you ever finished it, if not I highly recommend it!

I think the best is Talisman. Form one point of view I'd like it to be screened but from another I'm afraid it will be hard to keep the uniqueness of the story in the movie. Sometimes words hit harder than images.
Stephen could do that;)

Mith: Great choices! I actually dusted off a couple of books from my King collection and the first one I went back to was Firestarter, great book! Obviously The Stand is simply unbeatable, but Firestarter is up there!
