What is your ultimate fav Japanese anime/manga?

Its hard to give just one...but

I say One Piece!

Rurouni Kenshin will always be my fav.
But some of the recent ones - namely Chobits, Naruto, Bleach, etc are also good...

I'm hardly an expert... But I think my favorites have to be Paranoia Agent and FLCL. The first is such a simmering, tweaked exploration of human fear, control issues, and cultural mores, while the second is an amazingly strange, funny, explosive disection of anime itself. Both display amazing animation and visual story telling skills, and both force the viewer to think. There's no coasting while watching either series. Characters are deeply developed, and the plots -- um, as near as I can figure out -- are engaging and strong. Plus, they're so freakin' imaginative...

I love Cowboy Bebop, too. Great animation, with some of the best animated fight choreography I've ever seen. The characters are interesting, and the plots actually hold together throughout the episode -- something a lot of anime fails at. It's good science fiction, in that sf-meets-other-genre (in this case, a kind of hardboiled crime story) kind of way.

I'm also a fan of Appleseed (both the original and the somewhat recent followup) and, of course, Akira. (Anything that has that many characters screaming that often just has to be worth watching. ;) ) Oh... And Lupin the Third makes me laugh every time I watch the episodes or the films...

'Akira', 'Wicked City' and 'Ninja Scroll' ---all time faves

Recently bought the box set of 'Fist Of The North Star' and that aint bad too.

Did anyone liked Steam boy? done by o-tomo (Akira). I dont really hear about it in UK as much as Akira.. still good though

Hi everyone, mines are

Cowboy Bebop Vols. 1-3- based on the anime series.:p
Cowboy Bebop Shooting Star vol 1-2- an alternate universe version of the Bebop crew

You should check out Black Lagoon.

Think the fansubs for it are still around,
Black Lagoon is the name of a Japanese manga and an anime TV series created by Rei Hiroe.[1] The story follows a team of mercenaries known as Lagoon Company, who smuggle goods in and around the seas of Southeast Asia. Their base of operations is located in the fictional city of Roanapur in Thailand, and they transport goods in the PT boat Black Lagoon. Lagoon Company does business with various clients, but has a particularly friendly relationship with the Russian crime syndicate Hotel Moscow. The team takes on a variety of missions - which may involve violent firefights, hand-to-hand combat, and nautical battles - in various Southeast Asian locations. The members of Lagoon Company spend much of their down time at The Yellow Flag, a bar in Roanapur.
Black Lagoon premiered at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in March 2006 and began airing on 8 April 2006 in Japan, the series airing its final episode on 24 June that year.[2] The second season (called Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage), started airing in Japan on the 2 October 2006.[3] It has been licensed for release in North America by Geneon Entertainment.

Another awesome anime to check out is Utawarerumono.
Though I think ADV is calling it Shadow Chronicles. I don't know why since the title translates out to "The one being sung".
It has pretty much everything in it.. Drama,comedy,action.. and lots of action since half the show involves war. It's about a man who is found wounded then treated back to health. He has a mask on his face but can't remove it, Also he can't remember who he used to be. He is taken in by this village and later on leads them to victory over the corrupt goverment there. Which leads to more conflict from other warlords. This title I think is also out on DVD..
