I think, as much as it pains me to say it, that he's definitely dead. Despite hints earlier that after Coral, he wanted out, no more fighting; he'd fake his own death if necessary, so that he could disappear completely: "Shall I be seen to be slain then have my body vanish like Dassem did?" But I think his death was a little too real to be fake Plus, I'd doubt he'd do that to Korlat.
But there's hope, as Paran blessed the Bridgeburners before he left Moon's Spawn and there's that new glow that dances in the chamber after they've left...
(I've only just finished Memories of Ice, so if I'm saying stuff that is revealed in later books, don't point and laugh (or at least do it behind my back!))
