Which characters do you dislike the most from Eddings books?
I've only read the Belgariad, Mallorean and part of the redemption of Althalus so I can only really mention characters in the first 2.
I never got into Beltira and Belkira and found them seriously annoying, thankfully they weren't in it much. Also Feldegast was soooo irritating I was quite relieved when he changed back. King Drosta used to make me feel sick as the description was a little too good for my liking, yuk! And I think Ce'Nedra should've stayed with her father as it would've made for happier reading in my opinion, I never could stand her.

I'd probably have to agree about Ce'Nedra but I probably dislike all of them a little now as the same characters (with different names) and phrases (be nice) appear in Eddings other large body of work - The Elenium & Tamuli.
Plus they're all very cliched and two-dimensional characters with little maturity so as I've grown older I tend to wince when I read them.

I'll second Winter's Sorrow. The books were much better when I first read them. Now when I read them again I find many of the characters under-developed, like Adara for example and the twin sorcerors. I liked some of the characters like Silk and Belgarath but these books seem to fit a certain time and place in life. Eddings would have been better off with fewer, more well developed characters.

It's really hard here to dislike a character when he/she is not fleshed out enough to generate that sort of emotion. Yes Ce'Nedra was aggravating and childish but that just made the whole thing irritating especially when the behaviour continued past the point where it made any sense at all. She was too shallow a character to really dislike.

dislike them all. but esp ce'nedra. and polgara. she was so full of herself, i thought.
and silk and belgarath. i got so sick of their stupid voices and putting on disguises. it was just irratating. ok that was what the plot called for, but they never tried to think of other ways to do things.

hated everyone really. except durnik.

From the Belgariad/Malloreon? Definitely Ce'Nedra. I know that she was probably written to be annoying in that 'spoiled brat' kind of way, and whilst there were others I disliked (in most of the series), no-one quite comes close to her.

Ya HappyHippo but Gods are meant to be perfect, they are like the sons of the world or UL. What does UL stand for though Universal Something. Back to the point. I like Ce'Nedra, she gave me a real laugh. My disliked character was Torak, Asharak and Zandramas.

i utterly LOATHE both Ce'Nedra and Durnik! Zakath too - before he joins the quest at least. Brand annoyed me too when he couldn't even say the words to forgive Olban as he was dying... thats just cold... he deserved to be assassinated. Oh, and Ariana - Lelldorin's Mimbrate Wife - SO utterly domestic... hmmm... who else do i hate... Didn't like Eriond much. Could happily have seen Liselle killed off... though she had moments... she should have killed harakan with a weapon and not Zith, it would have been much cooler. Poledra always struck me as rather dull too...

Aw, I loved Relg although I never quite worked out why, perhaps it was the playing hard to get routine, I always did like the chase haha.

Oh, I forgot about Aphrael, too! Not to mention her 'clone' character, Eleria, in The Elder Gods.

By the way, ELFS? (Eddings Lead Female Syndrome) That's such a perfect term for it!:)

Always thought that Brill would have been high up the list.

In addition to his actions it was his lack of hygene that did it for me.

Worked in an office with someone who had a real problem with that - any idea how bad it can be - one person took up chain smoking in the office (back in 80's/early 90s) to try to mask the smell.

I get a feeling that of this thread survives long enough, all the characters are gonna get trashed, not that they dont deserve it, but...

I kinda liked the kelten dude or so not the pious one and not his squire but one of those others, one of those warriors who accompanied Sparhawk, though in the end the constant laughing with enemy foes and killling them with easy become too much.

Oh and i kinda liked Aphrael cousin? The God who goes knocking at the door, and throwing in that bomb in those cave killing those alien beings.

Notice how i added kinda

Agree completely.

Ehlana was her counterpart in the Elenium, and yes, I hate her, too.

I don't think I disliked any of the caracters per se, although Polgara's arrogance did get a bit annoying at times. According to Eddings, UL was a typo, but he liked it, it doesn't stand for anything. I loved UL and the Gorim putting Relg in his place, though.:p
