If I wanted to collect

First, to fine-tune the question: Are you referring to collecting Erikson's work (as this was posted in his forum)? Or collecting in general (in which case this will need to be moved elsewhere)? A little more information about what you're asking would help garner more helpful answers....:)

First thing's first - make sure you don't buy anything by Steve Erickson - thats a different author. All Erikson's works are published as "Steven Erikson", or his real name of Steve Lundin.

So is this Steven Erikson start of Tale of the Malazan Empire:

Is this price accurate of how much I would be paying.

What would be the first hardcover? Does a ARC/Proof hardcover exist?

Of course Steven Erikson! This is part of my research. I grew fustrated after I could not find a dedicated area about the editions.

So far I have the american hardcovers book 1-4.

After that information is scare. How many edition of each book have been released. ARC/proofs included.

Would this be the best place to start:

Nicodimas -- I received the message about not being able to post. I'm afraid I've learned from experience to not respond by email to people I've not gotten to know, but I wanted to answer your query. I personally don't know why you wouldn't be able to, but I've left a note of inquiry with the other mods to see if any of them may be able to explain. You may also want to try to reach I, Brian, and see if there's a glitch in the system somewhere. Sorry I couldn't be more help.:)

Let me be clearer.

So far I have 1-4 on Hardcover by Steven Erikson.

I was wondering how many editions their are. I have researched, but can't find any good information. Is there a specific site I am missing?

I was looking at this one, but was not sure if it overpriced. This is my research :)

I'm preety new to collecting, so the paperback struck me as odd. I would prefer hardcover. Has a small press place started to make a collectors edition series?

I like to research going book prices on BookFinder.com: Search and Price Comparison for New, Out-of-Print and Used Books

That $300 proof can be bought for $15 elsewhere, and first ed hardcover isn't too expensive either. Just be sure you buy from a dealer with other satisfied customers, and one that is detailed in description of condition. YOu may have to email the dealer to ge tthis, but it beats paying out a good sum just to find out later the book smells musty or has writing inside...

Ok, in the US, there are the first four in hardcover, which I assume are the ones you've got, and also the first two in softcover so far. Apart from that, there are the "rest-of-the-world" editions;) Which is 1-6 in Trade Paperback and Mass-Market Paperback. 5 and 6 also have hardcover editions.

As for the Novellas, go have a look at PS Publishing Assuming you're in the States, shipping might be a bit much, so buy off Amazon or something, but thats all the ones that have been Published. There are various editions of each. Nightshade books have also done US editions of The Healthy Dead and Blood Follows...

If you need info on anything else, just ask, or take a look over at Malazan Forums - Powered by vBulletin

Awesome. I had not come across bookfinder. Looks like what I have been searching for.

Thank you all!

Also... get in contact with other people who collect themselves, and who know some of the ins and outs of the field. Sometimes a paperback edition may be much more valuable for a collection (both economically and aesthetically) than the hardbound; this may be because it has better cover art, or art by a "hot" artist, or because it had a small print run, or the distribution was poor, or it has a revised or corrected text different from the hardbound... there are any number of factors that can make a difference. If you talk to bookdealers who work with such information, they may be able to give you some pointers, depending on the purposes of your own collection. So the better idea you have as to what you want in your collecting, the more organized and efficient you can be with it (and thus the more likely to actually achieve the goals you've set out for, rather than fumbling in various directions as so many of us -- myself, for instance -- do to begin with!).

JD makes a good point. Fortunately, you are in the right place for Erikson - I have the joint biggest collection of Malazan books in a recent competition on the malazanempire forums;) Like I said, feel free to ask for more info if you need it:)
