First Lines

I used to believe that you only live once, but then I died and life became interesting at last.

I used to believe I wanted an interesting life, but I've since learned to stop wishing.

She walked with the silvery grace of the moonlight, and cared not for the hearts of mortal men.

"Ask me again if I've completed the first line," Kane enquired of his wife lying motionless at his feet in a pool of blood.

Ah, Tax time.

This cannot be happening, he thought, putting his hands to his head.

A banging, and the rattling of the loose glass panes in the old front door of his filthy shop woke him on the threadbare couch to the pain that was his head, and the smell of urine.

'In four minutes,' he said, grinning, 'you'll be dead. Good luck trying to survive.'

"That looks good on you," the voice said, and she felt the skeletal fingers caress the side of her face, "and you'll need to look good for the role you now have to play."

This one's kind of long, just to shake things up, I think it works?

I had the desire to squash the duty-bound religion of my darling father, who often lamented at his own greatness while ignoring mine; had he spent the time to consider that his world was now dying, and the old religions would die with him as these times are full of change and new things; that sensibility he held to was turning into insanity, and he turned gray at the very mention of the new religions, heretics, he said; yet, I could not temper his fears nor slay my own, and so we went hand in hand without speaking, our blades raised high to the darkness that threatened where those sweet battle calls caressed the breast of an already war-torn nation; I could not agree with my father's rule of duty to a long dead god, but I would follow his honor, even to my own death.

He white-knuckled his harness as his lifepod punched through the thickening atmosphere, each lurch a possible result of blasterfire.

Thanks Dexter!

He stared up at the cloudless night sky where a crescent moon smiled crookedly down at him, and dread crept into his bones as he realised that the stars had vanished.

The tip of the mortuary sword was pressed to the base of her pale throat, drawing a little droplet of blood that flowed down the etchings in the sword's blade, painting them a sunset scarlet.

... hmmm, I might use that... :)
