So what do you think is the greatest anime of all time?

I'd have to be a traditionalist, I'm afraid, and say Ghost in the Shell, followed by Akira, simply because of the groundbreaking ideas.

I was thinking of something that ticks all boxes. What's the best piece of anime you've seen that has pretty much close to everything - good art/character designs, a good storyline, strong characters, technical detail, even music. I know they're pretty rare, but some must exist, right?

Now that I think a bit more about it, HnG probably isn't my favorite anime, since I don't have one favorite. There are so many great ones.

Juuni Kokki
GunGrave
Hunter X Hunter
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Gundam Wing

I really just could go on and on.

Now, Cowboy Bebop I'd definitely have as one of the greatest anime series of all time. Mind you, the movie wasn't bad, too.:)

I personally can't think of which is the greatest show.. they all have their moments.

Honestly, I haven't seen that many, and I get dissapointed trying to watch them on tv--so now I'm renting them. In the meantime, I'll have to go with Ghost in the Shell, both the movie and the "Stand Alone Complex."

I do agree that from what I've seen it's a hard choice. Other anime series I've had a taste of include Full Metal Alchemist, Trigun, Blood+ (okay, exactly one episode), Trinity Blood, Inu-Yasha, Bleach, One Piece--there may be a few more I can't think of off-hand. I've seen a few other movies, too, such as A Wind Called Amnesia, Akira, Spirited Away, and couple of Inu-Yasha. There's one or two more for which I can't remember the titles. Okay, yeah, I've seen a couple of Cowboy Bepop, Tenchi and Outlaw Star as well. Sheesh, I've seen more than I thought I had! Anyway, I've enjoyed most of them immensely and it's hard to choose one that's the best.

Outlaw Star I loved. A nice blend of comedy and action. Spirited Away is another good one, but out of all of Miyazaki/Ghibli's work I'd also have to say that I liked Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke, too.:) I liked Tenchi at the start of the series, but my interest started dropping off when it became too repetitive. The last Tenchi movie was good, though.

I love a lot of the new anime, Eureka 7 is brilliant, so is Ghost in the Shell, and Samuria Champloo....

But, if I had to decide what my all time fav is, it would have to be Vampire Hunter D, because that was the first anime I watched that was anime. Or Fire and Ice if that counts as anime.

I could list the anime we watched at a recent sci fi soc party, but it probably isn't appropriate... but a bottle of wine helped.

I've seen some episodes, and whilst it's not without it's charm, it's not for me. Maybe it's because I'm older. I'm sure it's a great show, though.:)

Naruto is an okay show. The Water Country arc was the best part of Naruto, IMHO. The main characters were starting to gel and there was some good character development. Zabuza and Haku were great and compelling antagonists.

The following arcs after that, particularly the filler arcs that are not part of the manga I found somewhat retarded. Usually in a story like Naruto's, a character develops into something more. In Naruto, I found the main character tends to devolve. Sure he get more powerful, but he doesn't seem to learn from the mistakes he makes.

I don't know if I just have a bias against stupid characters. Characters like Naruto and Beet (from Beet the Vandel Buster) bother me. Maybe its because they tend to preach a lot in a holier than thou manner one minute, then goof off and get themselves in trouble the next. They just come off as giant posers. On the other hand, take a character like Luffy from One Piece. He is comparatively even stupider than the two I mentioned before but I love him. He's a big goof but but doesn't come off as a poser when he says something inspirational. Maybe its just a matter of character consistency.

i would have to say that naruto is the Greatest Anime of all time
It's dbz but with ninjas...The comic is one thing which is great..
The Anime is total trash, It's like they're tring to appeal to the 5-10 year old audiance with fart jokes. They use gap fillers constantly combined with constant flash backs to eat up time. DBZ did the same tactics to extend out the shows length. When Sasuke leaves the series in the first season you can stop watching.. the rest is all crap. Even the new season which is airing is filled repeating information and gap fillers to buy time. Bleach even has been following this bad mistake.
