The greatest anime of all time

Ghibli puts out a lot of variety in what they produce and (from what I have seen) its all high quality stuff, but there is certainly a varied scope of story and craft going on that makes some productions more appealing to others.

I can't say there is a Ghibli film that I have seen that I have not liked, but I can say that films like Nausicaa, Proncess Mononoke and Castle in the Sky sit firmly at the top of the list for met (Grave of the Fireflies sits very high as well but its the sort of film one has to really be in the mood to see again rather than something you just put on for entertainment)

Studio Ghibli productions are so overrated to me, people in the west that dont usually watch anime seem think they are masterpieces because they are so big, marketed in west. Maybe because they look like Disney style wise...
I can't speak for others, nor am I particularly well watched when it comes to anime but I like studio Ghibli so much precisely because they are so different to Disney (or other western animators). Sure, there may well be better stuff out there (for all I know) but that only goes to show how much better they are in the east at making animations.

You need to look up some of the series mentioned in this thread. The best anime arent films, they are usually tv shows.

Ghost in the Shell,Akira etc are few examples.

Both are quality sf stories by the way ;)

I don't have time to watch anime tv series unfortunately. I barely have a chance to watch any of the films. My wife can't watch animation; she just thinks it's childish.

erm they are both films Akira and Ghost in the Shell.
Though Ghost in the Shell does have a tv series (very good) although it is an "alternate timeline" setup based a little more strongly (though not totally) on the manga (comic).

Are you by chance also meaning the manga when you mention Akira and Ghost in the Shell? Both have a manga version which the films were based off (I've not had a chance to read either but from what I have heard they are well worth reading.)

I've seen both the films of "Akira" and "Ghost in the Shell".

And I have "Grave of the Fireflies" lined up on my hard drive ready to watch.

I always prefer the manga versions because they are original works often great art.

I meant GITS anime tv series and Akira manga series.

GITS have a great movie but the anime series is easier to understand than the manga.

I read the manga, so complex compared to the anime. I didnt understand what was the story. I will try it again.

I meant usually tv or manga series are the best of anime/manga fields.

Full Metal Alchemist,Gundam(classic),Macross,Lone Wolf and Cub,Berserk,Golgo 13,Monster etc

I've seen quite a lot of anime series and more than a few films by now. Studio Ghibli still rates pretty high with me. Personally, I like Spirited Away more than any western film I've seen - animated or not. I can't really say the same for movies like Kiki's Delivery Service or The Cat's Return, but they were both quite endearing and perfect for watching with my son.

On the other hand, I really am more a series kind of guy, anyway. :D I like getting into longer storylines, getting closer to the characters, etc.

the best have to be Beck (Mongolian Chop Squad) and Genshiken (only Series 1 though)

I like most Ghibli stuff, but I wish they'd work sometimes in slightly more mature territory, like Mononoke or the Nausicaa manga (which wasn't Ghibli, but was Miyazaki, and much better than the film). Some friends saw Ponyo and said it was great, but it looks a bit too "young" for my taste. Apparently it hasn't even got a blob-monster!
