Just saw 300 and I have to say I loved it - okay, the dialogue wasn't written by Oscar Wilde, but a visually stunning representation and lots of action. Brings to mind the question, which is the best film representation of a graphic novel?

I'm leaning towards Lone Wolf and Cub.

What do you think?

I'm probably not the best person to ask, given that the graphic novels I read are manga, and a fair few of them have already been produced into some kind of film. Out of those, I'd have to say that Ghost in the Shell - Standalone Complex (series) makes the best film/series, but then I'm biased. It stays fairly loyal to Shirow's original manga, and is consistently high quality sci-fi drama.

If you mean Marvel or DC, then probably the best graphic novel into a film that I've seen was probably Batman Begins - if only conceptually.

In the Marvel/DC universe, I know it's mainstream, but I do like the Spiderman movies (2 more than 1 so far) but of them all, my fave is Blade.

I would have to say The Crow is the best graphic novel to movie adaption yet, followed up some way by V for Vendetta, which whilst not amazing, did a pretty good job of conveying the story better than any of the other Alan Moore adaptions to date.

I also really liked Daredevil too, although I suspect I am in a minority here.

on the contrary, i thought Daredevil was one of the best Marvel films made. the reason people didn't like it was because they either didn't appreciate the story or were so adamant in their hatred of Ben affleck they hated it before they saw it.

Batman Begins is probably the best mainstream conversion, as previously stated due to the concept. Sin City was also well done, due to its style keeping true to the comics.

Didn't see 300 yet, so I'll have to go with Tim Burton's seconed Batman or Nolen's Batman begins.

I think the two best ones are 300, Sin City cause Frank Miller has fans as director that are true to his work.

None of the Batman's are great. Even though Batman Begins was good, i couldnt stand the changes they made. Too much change.

I am a big fan of Batman so i will never like these movies too much cause of what they did by making the best Batman villain aka Ra's into an irish guy and Carmine Falcone, he was a fricking brittish guy despite his name and his maffia. Lame.

My personal opinion would be sin city. one of the few that stayed true to the style of the graphic novel. But I reckon Hellboy deserves a mention here. Not the most amazing of films but damn good fun. just like the graphic novels.

Oooo Yeah!!! :D Hellboy Movie is definately in the top ten.

Visually 300 and Sin city are stunning. Spider-man 2 has everything a super hero film needs, action, humour, romance, tension, drama, and a badass villian.

Wonder what Watchmen will be like...

Just remembered Blade I and II was awesome. Snipes is the best at playing his comic character, he oozes of the coolness and prowess of Blade.

I agree with you about the first Blade - a fantastic movie..I think they deteriorated from that point - 3 was awful

The second was better action wise but yeah the third was horrible.

I mean jessica biel and whoever that comedy wannabe guy is.....

Ghost in the Shell is excellent. i thought 300 was visually impressive, but would agree that the wooden dialogue and the prevailing overtones of homoeroticism kinda put me off, or at least stopped me from taking it too seriously

The director isnt nearly as good storyteller as FM so that was the negative with the movie.

I don't particuarly see how this is true, I honestly thought that the Movie is the only Comic book adaptation that copies the book almost completely. All of the dialogue is there, and Snyder has even added more storylines into it (courtroom, relationships between other spartans etc)

300 was just Zack Snyder's practice run for the Watchmen adaptation anyway

For me it is still the original Spiderman movie followed by the last Batman movie Batman Returns.

Err...GOLLUM don't you mean Batman Begins, which is actually the last movie of the said character's franchise or am I missing something.

for me, nothing thus far made as movies of the graphic novel genre rivals Hellboy.

Cheer's, DeepThought

The Crow definitely. The original movie not all the many spin offs. I loved that. It's so very over the top it's actually good. Dark but very good.

Then there's the first 2 Batman movies that Tim Burton did and the last one with Christian Bale. Those were true to the character of Batman as in the comics where he's dark and angst-ridden.

300 ... oh yes indeed. That was gorgeous. Very well done indeed. I loved it and I suspect most of the female population of the world did as well.

The worst would have to be League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which strayed very far away indeed from the comics. But then again there was much in the comics they might not have been able to comfortably transfer to the silver screen.

I thought the movie From Hell, based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and starring Johnny Depp was well done too. Having always been fascinated by the Ripper I very much liked Moore's take on the mystery killer with the plot to hide an illegitimate child and Masonic overtones.
