It's really hard for me to compare any author, no matter how good he is, because of the Ballard's uniqueness. Maybe Thomas Disch, but he wrote so few... Possibly the early short stories of Philip K. Dick, though he certainly never possessed as rich language as Ballard did.

From this point of view, a number of New Wave writers are comparable to him. The Brian Aldiss of the late '60s/early '70s, M. John Harrison, going further afield, Delany. Though I think the closest may be Pamela Zoline, though she only ever published five stories. But "The Heat Death of the Universe," and the book of the same title that collects all the stories, is a marvel. Also, the New Worlds best-of anthology edited by Moorcock is definitely worth checking out.

Tarkovsky's movie "Stalker" also has a quite Ballardian feel to it.

Yes. Regarding that film - how is it that people wandering through a wood not doing anything much, and where nothing much happens to them, is creepy as heck?

Only story written by him that I recall is "Now:Zero." I thought it was all right. I think it was the basis for the manga series Death Note.
I've been meaning to read Crash for a while.
