Martin overuses his sex scenes too much. Not in quantity - if they were written well it would be fine, but he has a childish style of writing that belies his writing in the rest of the books. They make me cringe.
In general I don't have a problem with sex scenes in books but when reading Game of Thrones I was actually quite offended by the continuouse use of quite graffic rape scenes.

Whether or not anyone else found them graphic I don't know but I genuinly felt that there was too much of it and that Martin could well have been getting a kick out of it - obviously i would hope that that isn't true but you never know!

Well, if you want to read his "A Song of Ice and Fire" series you need to start with A Game of Thrones. If it doesn't matter which book, try Fevre Dreams. I haven't read that one yet, so I can't comment on it personally, but I have heard it is good.

I would definitely care. But I was specifically talking about POV characters only. And while that particular scene was jaw-dropping, there was only one POV character that kicked the bucket...kinda.;)

i would definitely not think this a book for the yonger fantasy readers. i know that not every author can appeal to everybody. i particularly appreciate the realism behind the evil in the hearts of the characters and also the realism in the innocence of others. but to tell you the truth the sex scenes never really stuck out in my head.

Look I have no problem with people that find downsides of a book I like, but the critic isn't meant as to describe the series, but more as a breaking down of the series and that's why I will judge any statement that is made in it.
Two facts that I have to point out:
1 You cannot win a civil war (there is no place to conquer. In any other case it isn't a civil war)
2 The only thing I like about the thing is the word 'defenestrated' Damn I love that word.:p

The sex scenes get worse. Are you gay?
No need for that, Lacey. :)

As for the sex - I don't remember much in the first two. It always seemed pretty well handled, especiallty compared to other authors I've read.

People just seem to be a little soft. Sex and violence in a fantasy novel? People getting killed? Political games?

i love it... i guess you have three choices you turn the tv on and see it, you pick up a book and read it, or you pick up a book read it and complain about it.

I must be having a brain freeze, cause I can't think of who else( a POV character only) dies or is killed. If you don't want to post it here please send me a pm to let me know who it is. Refresh my memory as it were, cause mine sucks. :D

*****SPOILERS******

In the second novel, there's the "viking" styled character, who takes the Stark castle - also, the "Onion Knight" from Stannis's crowd is made looks as if he perishes in the naval engagement at the end of book 2. Both were entirely peripheral characters, though, as I complained about before.

I was speaking of POV characters specifically.:)

I don't consider these actual spoilers, but just in case someone hasn't read the whole series so far...
***********SPOILERS************

To my knowledge only two, well actually just one, have died. Really only Eddard Stark is truly dead.

I wasn't complaining Brian, btw, just answering Lacey the fairy in kind;)

And I wasn't against the sex scenes - I think when done right, they can add a lot to a series, but I think Martin just goes about them the wrong way. Personal bug;)

****Spoilers****
What is this fear of killing off characters? There is hardly a shortage of characters in his books. The only central characters to be killed are Ned Stark and in a way Robert Baretheon but they are not empty deaths - they pave the way for the civil war, the backdrop of the entire story. Robb Stark is killed at the wedding - which was heart rending but on the cards. Renly is killed by his brother - not a big concern. Otherwise lesser men soldiers etc are killed throughout.
Sex - can people please detail which sex scenes are apparently 'worse'. I want names and points of reference.

Lacey - I'll have a look over the books this weekend... dunno If I'll be able to find the scenes, but I'll try.

hodor - well, he does;)

hodor, don't pay any attention to Lacey or Cal, they just like to stir things up...:p:D

Just to let you all know that I had to remove a couple of posts from this thread, because of very inappropriate comments made.

This is a very informal and friendly community, but let's not forget it is also a public forum, and therefore its worth bearing in mind some degree of responsibility for what it actually posted.

...and rightly done Brian! Just curious, however, if there is actually a link to this review? Hmmmmm?
