Your Take on Vampires

I have been toying around with an idea for a few years about a vampire that ends up being infected with the HIV/AIDS virus but I'm honestly not sure I could do the subject matter justice.

I love a good vampire story and I have read a few. I guess the one that is still my favorite is Fevre Dream by George R R Martin. I actually like his take on vampires.
Not to make to long a story of it his story is that vampires are the decendents of Cain (Adam and Eve) After Cain slew his brother Able he was cast out. Eventually Cain met and married a woman from the land of Nod who was from the land of night and darkness. That darkness meant they had to live in the dark and not that they were black. According to the bible they were long-lived as are vampires.
I have read a few other books but they are the usual vampire stories that is why I like Martin's story best.

Nosegays...

Um, snacking on a sick peasant would be a persistent fear for any Vampire...

I've used an unwary Vamp as a TB carrier, and nosegays as the *real* reason Vamps shun garlic...

I don't often use smileys but, IMHO, that notion deserves a :D.

I had an idea involving a sort of Vampirisitic hierarchy, on the bottom level you'd have Zombies, vampires that refused to drink human blood and so caught diseases that caused them to degenerate mentally, Zombies have a lower form of regeneration than Vampires, while normal Vampires can regenerate brain cells and brain tissue (hence only being able to kill them via heart impalement) Zombies cannot. Zombies can regenerate simpler flesh, since the regeneration is only simple, renewing cells do not need to be pumped through the blood stream (making the only way to kill a Zombie cranial damage).

Vampires would be very regal beings. They would only drink the purest blood (lest they discontinue their rapid evolution) and would be much like a capitalistic/monarchical society in the way they work and treat each other. They would be able to regenerate any part of their body via 'Black blood cells' (imagine phagocytes and lymphocytes on crack). The downside of such regeneration is that if you stop the heart you stop the healing process.

Gargoyles would be the altogether genetically superior and wiser of the three species. Gargoyles would be extremely independent, making every Gargoyle a hero against hordes of Zombies and groups of Vampires. The idea is that while Gargoyles are genetically superior, they also have to rely on themselves giving them no real advantage over the prolific Zombies and organized Vampires. They are close to immortal beings in that they can regenerate quickly without use of their heart, the only remaining side affect of their vampirism is their weakness to heat and sunlight. Gargoyles have thick impenetrable skin, without moisture and cool air their skin thickens and constricts them.

I see this thread is a wee bit old, but I like it and will reply anyways:D

My take on vampires? I don't normally read books with the typical 'bite your neck and turn you evil because I'm evil too' vampires. They're over-used and while they make great sub-villians, like minions, I'd like to see what else they're capable of.

I love your idea, Ace, about the Scottish vampires. I'd definitely read it.

I've been entertaining an idea for some time now about a civilization known as the Herikin - a race of beings who gain sustenance from something they call the ''fay-byre'' (blood-fount in their language) which is essentially the blood of the planet they inhabit, coursing through the land in veins and channels to surface in vast, subterannean wells. Their architecture reflects their need for this, as they reside in vast 'temple-cities' that spiral down miles into the land, giant cylinders topped by heavily fortified domes at ground level.
Now, the Herikin people can survive on the blood of mammals such as Humans and the other races with which they co-exist, but to do so for more than a very short period of time has a detrimental effect on their mental state. The longer they spend living this way, the more agressive and irrational they become as they absorb into themselves chemicals that can't exist in harmony within their anatomy.
In their history there have been civil-wars etc. due to such issues. But that's not for this thread - had to stop myself listing their entire bio! Anyway yeah, I think the romantic dracula/lestat-esque has been done to death. Originality!

...Unless... was that idea original? *wrestling with self-doubt now*
(PS. If this idea is original enough that it can be considered mine, please don't steal it - for while the thought of hunting you down and drawing blood pleases me immensely, I'm constantly trying to be pleasant )

personally, i've allways enjoyed Castlevania. ^^

Seriously though, i've never been big into Vampires. But several people have put up well balanced opinions and arguments in this thread. should i ever want to use one in a story of mine, I'll ask here.

Sounds a bit like the homeworld of Vampirella.

The homeworld of what? Do tell.

Can't resist answering this one.... title character of a magazine put out by Jim Warren. Here's one site devoted to her (and the other Warren magazines of that ilk):

WARREN MAGAZINE Collection

along with a gallery of cover art from the magazine....

Vampirella: Issues 1-40

I vaguely recall there being a television personality of that name, one of the independent tv stations' hosts for their "creature feature" slot, but I don't see anything coming up when I look... yet....

Vlad: As for the "odd bad one"... I've got the granddaddy of 'em all lined up to read when I finish with the LeFanu... yup, the whole darned tale of Varney, the Vampire; or, The Feast of Blood, one of the original penny dreadfuls.....:p
