I'd go with Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. I loved that series, and it is long overdue for a reread. This series was also an inspiration for GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire, but I don't see how, quite yet. The two worlds are quite a bit different, except maybe the structure of the kingdoms of Westeros.
It's more conceptual. Fantasy with real people wasn't a thing in the late 80's. Instead it was more idealized realms with big super-villains. Much like The Wheel of Time has one giant supervillain...
