I first read Prachett years ago, and though good, I just kind of got out of the habit.

More recently we were looking for reading material - I think while travelling - and got Going Postal.

My impression is that Pratchett has been getting better and better - Thief of Time, then The Truth, now Thud - they all come across as highly polished works, something I didn't always think applied to his earlier ones.

My impression is that his writing and story-telling standards real excell of late.

Anyway, now on the lookout for Monstrous Regiment...

Well, as one might know, I've been recently ploughing my way through the Discworld series and I've almost finished Pyramids now. However, I can already tell that he's improving with every book, and have been told so by other people.

Yup Monsrous regiment isnt the best, I would get it out of the Library if you can.

Although that said, its the only duffer in a long line of rather good books. I cannot recomend the TIffany Aching books higly enough, especially his latest in this line the Wintersmith.

Now I quite liked Monstrous Regiment. As a book it's quite good, and as part of the series, it's always nice for a bit of variation. Sure, one cannot get enough of the City Watch, the Witches, Rincewind and Wizards, but then again it's always refreshing to read something a bit... different.

Me too, Lenny - it's nice to get away from the usual suspects and Ankh-Morpork occasionally.

Please forgive me, but "Pratchett on a Roll" reminds me of some kind of dessert recipe or something.

I think Pratchett is definately on a roll :) Although I enjoy some books more than others, the standard is sufficiently high that I only look down on any of his books from the viewpoint of his other books. No other comedic fantasy writer has been able to hold a candle to him so far :D

Yes, I agree. I like them regulars, but now, in Pyramids, I like Teppic a lot, too. I don't think he's coming back is he?

He hasn't made an appearance since, no. Same goes with a couple of main characters from a couple more books.

I won't tell you who, but rather I'll let you find out for yourself.

I like assassins, obviously.

Like the cool men dressed in black, carrying all sorts of inhuming implements? Me too. :D

On topic, I still have to find a dull Pratchett's book. Only The Last Continent was a bit slow, but not so bad. Still, haven't read all of them yet.

Now I quite like "Last Continent". The stuff on Mono Island was a touch slow, but I thought the stuff with Rincewind on XXXX was better.

Maybe it's a bit slow because Australians are a bit slow?

*ducks behind something*

Hmmm, its being upside down Marky, all the blood pools round their heads, or was that CSI last night?

Sorry a bit random there. Just to clarify guys I didnt like Monstrous regiment as much as his last few because I felt the plot twist was a bit obvious and it was somewhat slower than his other books, that said think I might go back and re-read it. There were a few rather good lines and the Igor jokes were top notch!:D

I always enjoy a TP book. It usually has a nice easy flow to it but I do think that he's lost some of his scarcastic edge.
Some of his earlier books were so funny they had me laughing out loud (especially the footnotes) but the later ones have been amusing but not quite so laugh out loud funny.

I've only read half/three quarters of monstrous regiment, and never got any further, but I think iut might have been because I was reading 4 pratchetts a week and had been doing so for a while, and I might have been getting a bit weary.

All his books are really good, and if one lacks something, I think it gains somewhere else.

Surely the question was rhetorical.

It is a good book, it's just that in comparison with his other books it is slightly weaker. That's what I think, at least. :)

I found Jingo, Small Gods, Monstrous Regiment, Fifth Elephant and the Last Continent not so much to my taste the first time I read them.

Have re-read them all and liked them much better the second (or third) time.

Nightwatch is imho a superb book. One of the best books I have EVER read.

My favourite for all the bad jokes is Soul Music, I mean the 'grammatically correct - the Whom' - get your coat for that one Terry!!
