I have ehard this theory before and i don't know if there are any tips for this to beleived...but Does anybody have any insight to this cause I really want to know the mystery behind coldhand's...and I jsut want to know if Benjen is dead or not cause he was a total BADASS

Really? He was a total badass? He had like 4 paragraphs of time "on-screen" and never accomplished anything of import during them I dont think.

There is absolutely no proof one way or the other that Benjen=Coldhands. It may be so and some people think it is but theres just nothing there to point the way....so there ya go.

There is a long thread on this but at this point I'm too lazy to go find it...

I don't think Benjen is Coldhands. Bran would of recognized him right away.

ha thank you...and i was not talking about him being awesome in the sort'sthat he accomplished alot in the books...I was referring to the amount of respect he got from the other night's watch...

In all fairness he's a trueblood nobleborn Stark. If his character is normal and nothing special, its already normal for him to have lots of respect from the other men in the Nights Watch. merely from where he and the nights watch comes from, its history.

Then again he was first ranger, still, whilst i think the NW is underrated in many ways on this forum compared to southern knights, I dont think that in itself is such a big accomplished. Its clear that nobleborn seem to be rated higher when getting high up positions in the NW.

It is because the nobleborn are trained to be knight's..well not al lare trained to be knight's but they have a sense of training....and not only are most of the rest of the watch murderer's theives..and otehr sort's of criminals...Would u want somebody like that leading your rangers....no....So when it comes to that i think it is intended that the rangers are lead by someone that has experience

Such things dont really matter after years spent on the wall. Its just inbred in westerosi culture. Plus, Stark blood seems special to the NW

I always considered him a badass, its true he dosnt get much time in the books, but when he is talked about there is no doubt he is a Stark, he ventured deep into the Lands Behind the Wall, to find proof of the threat that existed there, he and his men also discovered all the "Dragonblood Weapons" and buried them, just think of the other people who ventures into the North Halfhand and such, im convinced Benjen is a badass of dimensions but no i dont believe he is Coldhands, however COldhands might know where in the World Benjen is. One thing i was wondering why did Benjen join the NIghtwatch in the first place ?

lubbock, the dragonglass thingie, is nothing more then speculation by fans. there is no proof whatsoever that benjen buried those things at the fist.

well I think that coldhand's wether he be benjen or not was once a night's watch...and i think that he or something else buried those dragonglass in order to help the night's watch beat the other's

There is no way Coldhands in Benjen Stark. It's too predictable, and too convenient. GRRM has been anything but. But... if I'm wrong, I should very much enjoy if it WERE indeed Benjen Stark.

I agree, it seems way to convenient to be Benjen. I still wonder if he is some character that we have been introduced to before that has "disappeared" or if it is a new character altogether.

It's really hard to say, Stark Winter, but convenience is not something this author has not given us. He's offed people that most readers want to enjoy from the start, and he's allowed characters that we dislike to live prosperous lives. One thing is for sure, that the wall IS indeed bound by magic. I don't believe for a second that Coldhands was never a member of the Night's Watch. He could be, but magic in this world is apparently beyond superstition, and the spell(s) preventing his accent beneath the wall could be just that... just a spell. Or the old ways. Or honor. Or the fear of hurting those that have warm blood running through their veins. Or all of those. Still three books to go, and I will be rabid for each volume!

maybe coldhands is a child of the forest.Martin never explains why war was brought to them...a resemblance to wights/others might have played a role.Guilt by association or somethin.

Through Bran's POV, I certainly hope to learn more about the Children of the Forest in ADWD.

I just hope we don't have to learn about them through another boring dream or another cryptic (and boring) statement made by his frog friends. I also hope Bran cuts out the whining while we're trying to learn about something cool like the Children of the Forest.

Your legs is broke. Suck it up, Bran.

yeah bran does love to whine=)...perhaps the weirwoods will tell us the can after all speak to the dead...that would be cool

Stop the Bran hatin'! I love his chapters, they're always full of mysterious tidbits of important information: the three eyed crow dreams, his warging, the Harrenhall tourney, the story about that queen who flew to the night's watch on dragons. When analyzed more closely, GRRM is actually giving us hints from each of these stories which contribute to the overall plot! Bran was the only one that the crow showed a macro view of the imminent threats coming to Westeros. He's going to be important!

Anyways, back on topic, I would also agree that Benjen Stark is not Coldhands. I think he's dead and buried to be honest. Or dead and walking... in any other book I would say he's alive plotting revenge or some such. But this is GRRM, it'd be too convenient for him to pop in at a critical moment, and everyone say " OH he IS alive after all!" People don't like to think he's dead because he didn't go out with a bang like Robb or Tywin did. Or should i say a "twang". Har! He's just...missing.

I do think Coldhands is a child of the forest though, they really don't say how tall he is. He is riding an elk as well (children have been known to ride elks), he summons thousands of crows in a mysterious feat of magic to save Sam from an Other, and he's affected by the magical effects of the wall (he can't pass under it). Also, I don't think Benjen knows how to ride an elk...

I'd like to agree that he's dead, but I can't.

From Rickon to Eddard to Sansa, every Stark has had a distinct story.

To create the ideal of Benjen as a top ranger for the Black, and just leave him dead just seems to go against the story as it has been written.

My theory, lol: he was following the wilding while they were looking for the Horn, watched them open up the graves, waited 'till they all had to go, and then found it himself.

Someone want to bet me 50 cents?
