I love KJ Parker's books. One of the best things is the humor amongst all the grit and reality. It isn't comedy, it's more like a POV with a sense of humor. And the quality of the actual writing is way above most other fantasy stuff, I think. Parker and Dave Duncan are my two favorite authors though both are very different (except for the little bit of humor).
