Now who do i read!?

Oh, bit late for this post...oh well...

David Eddings is really really good, in my opinion. The Belgarid and Mellorean seem mostly for 12-14 y/o boys starting to get into fantasy (the age of the main character, what he goes through etc is just right for that age group). plus, thats when i started reading them lol. good, simple starters.

The Elenium is good, followed by the Tamuli. Love the characters :)

Robin Hobb, Raymond E Fiest, Trudi C are good authors too. Janny Wurts. Tracy Hickman and Margret Weis's DragonLance books...I LOVE!!! Lots of other great books i've read, but can't name names!

I disliked the Wheel of Time series....really. They took FOREVER to get into anything! I think i made it to the 5th or 6th book before i couldn't take it any more!

The thing about David Gemmel is the fact that once I start in on one of his books I find it very hard to put down, even to sleep or eat. I can not say that about very many other authors, and I really do miss the possiblity of new books from David...So saying I am sad about his passing is a huge understatement, the man was quite possibly my favorite author.

I didn't read everything in the thread but, I'd suggest trying E. Moon's Paksenarrion trilogy. That is heroic/epic fantasy and I recommend it highly. If you haven't read Michael Moorecock's Eternal Champion books I can recommend modt of them (Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon), and the first Amber series by Zelazny is also good as absorbing, exciting and "somewhat" heroic.

I'd second Joe Abercrombie as a good place to start. He's the only author I've come across recently whose books have made me think of Gemmell as they are similar in spirit. Crime plays a big part in his books, and he has admitted in interviews to being influenced by old crime and revenge films. Also there is no icing on his books which is something I never found in any of Gemmell's books. It's bloody, violent, brutal, gritty and with characters that are all kinds of grey.

Another good author I'd recommend is Scott Lynch. Another very exciting new author. Fantastic crime based fantasy.

I've read on these here boards that PAUL KEARNEY is alot like Gemmell, I have'nt had chance to pick up one of his books yet but he's on my wanted list.
His latest book is THE TEN THOUSAND.

I have read his Sea Beggars and he has does have a Gemmell like quality. The depth of characters, grim worlds, good action writer.

He has also military elements which makes it Gemmell like.

Of all the writers mentioned in this thread he is the only that remind me of Gemmell. Thats why i have bought 4 books of his in less than a month.

Just getting into Ian M Banks. Despite being Sci-Fi (the one's i'm reading at least), he has a similar gritty nature to parts of his stories. I also like the scope of his storytelling, the timescales involved are often unthinkable.
