Thanks to everyone who has posted here.
Put simply, I absolutely adore Space Opera and top of my list in terms of works out there are E.E. Doc Smiths' Lensman series and too many Buck Rogers stories to list.
I'm finding the same trouble when trying to find great Space Opera style Sci-Fi comics outside of the Star Wars/Star Trek circuit. This is a shame as there was a terrific series out there(actually published in the UK), called Star Blazers. Those were printed in the format that the never ending 'Commando' comic book series is printed in and were superb. They even featured some great real life Space history pics and stories on the backs of some of the covers. Now days there a rare find but there is a great Role Playing game out called 'StarBlazer Adventures' which is published by the same people who currently publish the Dr Who RPG.
Right now moving right along here's a small list I've gathered together to assist as I know this is indeed not an easy subject matter to find in comic form.
Star Lord (ebay)
Star Blazers (ebay)
Sun Devils (ebay)
Star Hunters (ebay)
The Transmutation of Ike Garuda(more hard Sci-Fi and only a 2 parter but very interesting never the less).
Sci-Spy (A more recent series now available as a TPB).
Shock Rockets
Insurrection V3.6
Bad Planet(surprisingly really cook and even came with 3D glasses. Very recent so should be easy to obtain).
Blakes 7(The comic series is fun and is published in the Blakes 7 magazine that ran for 23 issues. It's pretty much an ebay only and the best way to snap it up is to wait until someone puts a whole run available, to grab them all at once. If your a B7 fan you will not be dissapointed. Particularly if you enjoyed the 4th season).
Overman(more hard Sci-Fi but still good Sci-Fi in comic form).
BUCK ROGERS. (The galaxies most rocking Space Opera if not the most well known Space Opera hero of all time).
That should get you started but please do let me know if you find any more. Some of the comics I've been trying to find for years I read as a kid and an example of the style in Stewert Cowley's(famous for the Terran Trade Authority Handbooks), Great Space Battles. I loved the trend towards more mechanical space vehicles solutions as opposed to the blinking lights everywhere ideas of designers on Star Wars for example.
Havn't seen them for years though so would love to know the titles of any of those if you can remember at all.
Well that will do for now, although of worthy note would be DC Comics ROM series(he was a galactic knight) and it featured some terrific ideas and sensational artwork. Then Marvels classic gem, 'The Silver Surfer', which is deffinately a Space Opera classic on a grand scale.
Look forward to checking up on this post to discover some more forgotten Space Opera gems.
