Some classic SF recommendations?

Although often recommended as a juvenile author, Andre Norton's books are quite readable for adults. Two early personal favorites of mine are Star Gate (1958) and The Last Planet---original title Star Rangers date 1960?.

Norton writes fantasy and sf but I have always preferred her sf. Do give a try if you have not done so.

I reread the Lensman series a few months back and would add my recommendation for it. Also anything Van Vogt wrote (though he gets raked by professional critics all the time).

I see no mention of Edgar Rice Burroughs books in the thread (if you're looking for truly old SF).

The Mars series (John Carter of Mars), Venus series (Carson of Venus) and the Moon Series are all quite enjoyable and readable pulp fiction. It's amazing that the first Mars series book was written back in 1912 or so!

I just picked up a nice copy this weekend of a collection of novels by Burroughs: two Pellucidar tales and three Mars stories. I read most of these when I was a kid, but it'll be fun to go over them again. The volume includes original illustrations also.

There are 11 books in the Mars (Barsoom) series. You should try to read them all in order. See Wikipedia for the full list.

I made it through a couple of the books, but after that Burroughs was such the master of coincidence, I couldn't continue, similar issues getting through Tarzan. personal preference has been Heinlein Juvenile or adult. Have Spacesuit will Travel is a great one. For those without an infinite number of sexual references, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress was excellent.

It's part of the starchild trilogy co-authored by these 2 great authors in the 1960s. An omnibus edn. of the trilogy is also available.

It's a great series! I particularly like the organ farms where criminals to the state are used to take body parts from as necessary for the productive citizens.

It is time for us to consider this concept says I, particularly in the USA where our prison population is relatively large and is ever more expensive to pay for.

Pohl did a number of sf duets with C.M. Kornbluth also. And in case no one has mentioned it yet (I know I have elsewhere) THE STAR KINGS by Edmond Hamilton is a superb read.
