Peter Jackson to be involved in Hobbit movie after all

Its going to be The Hobbit and The Necromancer or something like that isn't it? Starting off with the expelltion of The Necromancer out of Mirkwood?

Guillermo del Toro is busy writting the scripts for the two movies and says this about his involvement in a recent interview:

Q: But THE HOBBIT is such a huge undertaking. It's going to consume several years of your career--

Del Toro: But I know directorially, while I'm doing THE HOBBIT, that I will not take anything else. I will not hurry up and shoot a pilot. I will not hurry up and shoot a Spanish-language movie. It's going to be three-and-a-half or four solid years dedicated to THE HOBBIT.

It will be funny if New Line balks at paying out their contracts again after the film comes out.

Personally, I think Peter Jackson was brilliant. I went into the first movie of LOTR in fear and trembling, sure he would stuff up the whole feel of the story. I was surprised and delighted within 2 minutes of the start. His whole image of The Shire was utterly brilliant.

My comparison was the abortive and horrible attempt some years earlier of compressing the whole 3 books into a single feature length cartoon. An abomination!

Peter Jackson had to use omissions and a few minor additions and changes, but remained true to the spirit of the story throughout. If he had included Tom Bombadil, he would probably have needed to make a fourth film, and enough is sufficient. You others may moan and complain, but I am delighted.

Just to clarify the Bakshi animated feature in '78 entitled The Lord Of The Rings covered the first half of the entire LOTR trilogy. A second half was planned but never made. Then there's the '80 animated film by Rankin/Bass The Return Of The King, viewed as a pseudo-official sequel to the Bakshi filkm. This same crowd also made an adaptation of the Hobbit in '77. These 3 films are often sold as a boxed set or individual items.

Having seen all 3 films I quite enjoyed Bakshi's '78 adaption for its use of rotoscoping (where live action by costumed actors were played over the top of the animation) although the scripts written by Peter S Beagle was less than inspiring. The '80 film Return Of The King was fairly woeful I thought but The Hobbit film in '77 is perhaps the best of these 3 films.

I do agree though that Jackson's films are excellent and unlikely to be bettered as an adaptation of LOTR.

Cheers....

I saw the Bakshi film about five or six times at the cinema when it came out (well, I was only eleven, and my critical faculties were a little undeveloped). There are things to criticise about it (I would list them, but, y'know, bandwidth issues) but I agree that the rotoscoping was an interesting technique. I have it on DVD (rarely watched) and I still think the attack of the Black Riders at the ford was very effective; in fact I prefer that one scene to the Peter Jackson version.

I loved that film and was always a bit disapointed that they never finished the saga.
