Night Watch

Butcher license? I have Day Watch now, have to pretend it's not related to the books aswell to watch it. Oh well.

Anton killed his ex-wifes child or something? Never talked about anything weird like that in the book. Olga didn't make such a gross mess of feathers and goo. Plus she had old army clothes on in the book or whatever I think. And Anton gave her some old clothes of his, not Kostya's mothers.
Urm, he did make the deal to get his wife (girlfriend? I can't remember) to mis-carry. That was why he was at the old witch's flat.
And do you really worry about stuff like where he got the clothes from? It's a fairly irrelevant detail;)

Yes, it is irrelevant, when everythings different anyways. So doesn't really matter.

I recommend reading the books first before watching the movies. The second movie has excellent special effects and shows what can be achieved without Hollywood's heavy hand.

Thats what i do about books i didnt know much of before seeing the movie.

You can see in a movie 1% of the original story and it appeales you will prolly enjoy the book.

Having read Nightwatch, i wont got near the movies until i have read all the books in the series.

Yeah, that's probably wise. That's why I didn't watch the movies till I finished Twilight Watch, even though it's not the end. You can watch it though if you want, it's so different it doesn't even matter. The movies are ok I guess, no where near as good as the books though. The very basics are the same(barely), everything else changed.

So are the books any good then? I saw the movie "Night Watch" and really enjoyed it. But I've heard mix reviews of the books, some saying that the translation was terrible.

The translation is pretty good. You get the vibe thats is different cause changing Russian way of talk to english isnt easy.

I can tell you that The Gloom thing in the movie has much better word in the books .

The books are pretty good prolly 10 times better than the movies going by people i know who have read the books and seen the movie.

The translation is actually spot on. There is some subtle nuances that can't be translated from Russian, but other than that the translation "seems" to be great. I write seems, as I only read the first chapter of the English translation and original at the same time. As they were identical, I didn't feel the need to read the same story again at that time. The problem, for people who have seen the film first, could be that these are two really different stories. The film is not an adaptation but a directors vision for these events.

As long as you don't mind waiting for the last one to be translated then go for it. Unless you can read Russian, then your lucky. I suppose waiting is the usual anyways.

Thats nothing compared to Vampire Hunter D series, of 17 books starting in 1983 only 9 have been translated in 25 years :p

Finally! I just bought Last Watch yesterday. It's not supposed to be out till the 27th of this month but Borders often sneaks books onto shelves before the books are suppose to be there. The sad part is I can't remember much of the other three books. I hope things will come back to me as I start reading it. Anyone else buying the final book?

Edit:
And yeah, this thread sure is old. Older than I thought even. I guess its been a year since I read the books, no wonder I can only recall bits and pieces.

I read Daywatch a few months ago. Since i had too many books i hadnt read i waited alittle before buying the last two books.

Thats why i havent finished this series yet.

Also your will remember the other books when you read the last one. I didnt remember NightWatch well when i started Daywatch but as i read the same characters my mind was fully refereshed about what happened in book one.

But this time i have the last two books and will read them back to back to get a better feal of it.

Yeah, I started picking some things up as I'm reading it. Though I can't remember exact details of things which is a bit annoying. But I still remember enough to get by reading the book without too many issues at least.

Not me, I read it 3 years ago ( just checked - was it that long ago  )

And some parts of his books are very memorable - then again - some parts can be forgotten really quickly. IIRC - I had to re-read the first book before starting the third one - as I couldn't recall all the relevant details.

The actual sad part is that - so far "Last Watch" is the last watch.

Yeah, that sucks. He should keep writing them forever. Its not like Lukyanenko has to worry about the characters getting old and dying either. Anton can end up living thousands of years. Plus there is plenty of interesting things for his daughter to do when she grows up. But oh well, I guess we have to be happy with what we have.

Last Watch is sitting on my bookshelf, doesn't look like I'll get to read it for a while though, too much other good stuff in the queue infront of it!!

Yeah, that happens allot Rane Longfox. There's many books I need to read but my shelf has tons of things for me to get through first.
