do you think it's possible or likely GRRM will do a series prequel?

The Star Wars movies start out at the end then years later we see the younger players.

There is a lot of story lines in the current series that would make a good pre-series but I don't know since we alread know what happens that would ruin it.

Has this been discussed before?

The Hedge Knight set before the events. Personally I think part of the wonder of his world is that we don't know all about the past - that there was a time of high magic and flights of dragons but that now things have changed.
That said, he cerainly does not lack for material to build on or for a fan base willing to soak up the tales.
I have also not read it all , but there is the book he published most recently - that I can;t remember the title of - which contains many of his earlier works - chances are that even if there are not true back stories in there, there willl be ones that have a similar basis - those that helped forge the world in his minds eye - -its possible

I'd love to see a series about Robert's rebellion, but I don't think it will ever happen. After he's finished this series he'll have been working on it for what, twenty, twenty-five years? I imagine he'll want a break from Westeros. And I think I've heard say in interviews that he'd be unlikely to write any sequels or prequels - you might have to wait for our more knowledgeable posters to confirm or deny that.

But then again maybe we'll get lucky... Just don't hold your breath.

I think, maybe, that the Dunk and Egg novellas might end with the events at Summerhall. Where Dunk and Egg both die (amongst others) as King and Lord Commander. The end being us knowing how or what they did there with the events surrounding the attempt of dragon hatching/ Rhaegars birth.

Actually, the Star Wars Series started out in the middle, not the end. There are still three chapters/novels that Hollywood has not visited... yet. 7, 8, & 9.

GRRM has a number of Dunk 'n' Egg novellas planned, between six and twelve. Apparently these will take us from The Hedge Knight right up to the events of Summerhall, and he hasn't ruled out some of the later ones (the ones he will write post-ASoIaF) being longer or novel-length.

GRRM has also said he'd love to write a novel about King Aegon IV (Aegon the Unworthy), who was basically the Henry VIII of Westeros. He thought it would be great to write a first-person novel about one of Westeros' worst kings but with him as the hero of his own story. Obviously this would only be done when ASoIaF was complete.

According to rumour, the current Legacy of the Force series of novels is based in part on Lucas' outline for Episodes 7-9.

GRRM announced that October 6, 2015 will be the release date of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. These are the Dunk 'n' Egg tales.

But it won't include The She Wolves of Winterfell apparently. When will that story get published? Google search reveals nothing!

GRRM started writing it ages ago, but it looks like he's unhappy with how it turned out so needs to do a complete rewrite. That's why it's been pushed back until after TWoW is finished.

Just a few weeks ago, GRRM announced the Dunk & Egg prequels will be combined into one volume.

Actually, the other George, George Lucas, said recently that Disney (is Disney Hollywood?) have decided not to use any of several storylines that he presented for the new sequels and instead it has hired scriptwriters to make something else. There is also still some debate within fandom whether he really did write 9 episodes before he began, which is something he once claimed, or even if he wrote 6 episodes before he began. Certainly, even the story of the original trilogy was something that was still evolving as they were being made, which tends to argue against any huge secret overarching plan. More likely, he just had some vague ideas in his head.

Personally, I expect that so much of the back-story has been told in Game of Thrones that to keep the same level of surprising turns of tale in a prequel would be impossible, and it is those kind of shocks that make it so riveting.

In my view a good prequel shouldn't rely upon secrets revealed in the main story. That's kind of the problem Starwars had - the prequels didn't really try to present anything new or any new insights and instead was more focused on the secrets that we already knew.

A good prequel wants to dig deep - really in my view its a chance to flesh out world building and small stories from the first into major events. Yes we might know the "ultimate ending" but any good story has more twists and turns through the story not just the end ofit.

The best Star Wars prequel was The Knights of the Old Republic video game. Darth Revan and Darth Malak were the villains while Bastila Shan, Mission Vao, Carth Onasi, Jolee Bindo and some others were the heroes. It was a fun story that took place over 3,000 BS (Before Solo).

I liked the graphic novels with Ulic and Kay Qel Droma and Nomi Sunrider as the heroes and Freedon Nadd and Exar Khun as the villains. They were cool.
