2.01: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

I missed it, having misunderstood the scheduling - the first episode doesn't appear to been repeated because of Snooker - but thanks to Chrons, watched it on my laptop last night on the BBC Torchwood site. And thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's just entertainment, right? No-one here seriously looks to either Torchwood or Doctor Who for top quality speculative fiction do they?

I find Torchwood smart, sexy, funny and good at the buddy stuff. And absurd, of course. I shall continue watching with pleasure.

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

Just bringing it back to the 21st Century:

...but as soon as your dad walked into the room somehow they'd move onto hard drug taking or rampant nookie?

My dad was in the room watching it with me. :D And for once, he kept quiet - we've both watched the three NewWho series together, and the first Torchwood series, and in nearly every episode of each he's come out with criticisms of the story, the acting, the dialogue, the sets, the acting, the story... you get my drift. Maybe he's just getting old, or maybe may shouting at him to "Shut up!" has got through, but he didn't say I word.

As for the episode, I rather liked it. A brilliant way to get back into Torchwood. Anyone else notice the fact that Owen kept himself to himself? You'd have thunk the dead blowfish would some sort of, ahem, temptation.

I'm surprised the rest of the team could tell Owen and the Blowfish apart.

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

The Blowfish was the one which wasn't sleeping with everyone else....

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

I might be going against the grain, but I quite enjoyed this episode. It might be because the writing team have grown up a bit and don't feel it necessary to throw in a meaningless sex montage at inappropriate times any more, but it felt like the whole thing was done a lot more confidently. Maybe they've found their feet having listened to the criticisms people like us leveled at the first series (or possibly not) but the rest of the series should tell.

I admit that I did laugh at the 'help me Obi-Wan..' hologram joke, just the fact that it was faithfully physically replicated by James Marsters rather than just saying the line as is. I am a bit of a reference geek, being a fan of stuff such as Spaced which is full of refs to sci-fi and pop-culture stuff, so I love that kind of thing.
The whole Blowfish in a sports car thing wasn't as amusing as it sounded, and I couldn't help but think I'd seen his cousin in SG-1's ep 'Fire and Water'!

Hope that the rest of the series doesn't revert to its old habits, but looking good so far.

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

I must ask PT Teppic what sort of programmes he was watching the 70's, from glass blowing to rampant nookie? I do worry, feel like I missed something:( maybe we should lobby the BBC!

Good to see so many people liked it, and I agree Torchwood is a bit of fun not speculative fiction. As to Owen not being told apart from the blowfish, well you could be right but my wife would hit me for agreeing!:D

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

Well - it was marginal exaggeration, but you know what I mean...

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

Er, since when were the two mutually exclusive?

I brought up the term "speculative fiction" on this thread but prefaced it with the word "quality." I think Ice Fyre took it a bit further. I think Torchwood is fun as in "just a bit of fun." I don't see even those who like it defending it as great SF.

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

Great if you enjoyed it - then it is just a bit of fun. I however struggled to even find it that. To me it was / is neither fun or particularly entertaining. One or two 'fun' jokes just don't make it fun for me.

I still see no development of characters - the conversation about it being more fun when Jack was around seemed rather to point to the fact that there are absolutely no dynamics between the rest of the cast, which isn't something I would particularly think they would want to highlight.

I will try it for a bit longer but its getting to the point where I'm just not interested. :(:(:(

Is it just me or is Captain Jack of Torchwood peculiarly different to Captian Jack of Doctor Who. Jack in Doctor Who is a cheeky rogue with tons of charm - where's that in Torchwood? (I know its meant to be darker and edgy but still...).

All in all it seems to be a vehicle for RTD to tell the stories he wants to tell to his agenda.

No you aren't the first person I've heard say that.

Last year, I could have explained it because the "Torchwood" Jack may have been an older, more tired, more cynical Jack than the one the Doctor originally met in the 1940's. This Jack would have been living with the curse of immortality for a longer period of time. He could have already lived out an extended period of time back in the future, before returning to the 21st Century, "where it all changes."

After last seasons two series, two final episodes, in which Jack crossed from one series to the other, that can no longer be used as an excuse. So, I can only agree with you.

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

Given the behaviour of his team, it's a wonder Capt. Jack hasn't had a nervous breakdown or two. (And when he's with the Doctor, he doesn't have the burden of leadership.)

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

I just managed to watch this on my sky +....finally

I liked it i think it was as some have said a pilot like episode.

I can see from the preview of the next episode/s that it is going to be extremely over the top in a good way.

But please please either get rid of or teach that silly welsh copper to defend herself!! everybloodytime its her!!!!

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

I enjoyed the episode and found the one-liners very amusing. Probably one of the best Torchwoods so far.

My one small criticism would be the blowfish at the beginning - he looked like he had travelled through time from an early Doctor Who episode, when men in rubber masks made perfectly acceptable aliens. Has Torchwood blown its make-up / special effects budget on other things? Or perhaps they thought because his appearance was short-lived (literally) that they didn't have to bother.

He did look a lot like the marshmen from a story I forget the title of. I didn't reflect on that at the time, but possibly they thought such poor make-up would all be part of the joke. I mean that whole opening sequence wasn't too serious, and was meant to be a joke, wasn't it?

It's repeated on BBC2 again tonight at 7pm if you missed it, followed later by 'Torchwood Confidential' and then the next episode 'Sleeper'. Wednesday's on BBC2 has become a 'Torchwood' night. I must admit I'm looking forward to the new episode tonight following this one. I'm going to start a new thread for it now, but I won't be able to comment on it tonight as I have to get up early tomorrow.

Funny you should say this, I just watched Buffy investigate the Swim Team in Sunnydale and wondered where else I'd seen those rubbery fish faces!!! :D

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

Contans SPOILER if anyone cares this long after transmission.

I meant to ask this before: If Captain John's lips have enough poisonous lip gloss on them to paralyse Gwen, how come he's not affected? Ok, I know, he's full of antidote but shouldn't someone have SAID?

Re: 2.1: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang

Presumably he has barrier cream between his lips and anything else on them...
